Alger's 8-Strikeout Performance Powers LCU Over Regis to Advance in the NCAA South Central Regional

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Aydan Alger was mowing people down on Friday, fanning eight Regis hitters over seven innings of work to help lead the No. 4 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals past the Rangers 8-4 to advance in the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament.

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Alger (7-3) went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and walking three for LCU (42-14). Senior Logan Ellis also made an impact on the mound for the Chaps, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing just one hit.

Sophomore Jacob Gutierrez led the Chaps at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Senior Nate Van Maanen also put together a noteworthy performance at the dish going 1-for-2 with three walks and two RBIs. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Chaps got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hayden Blair, Gutierrez, and Ryan Ball all collected RBIs in the opening frame. 

The Chaps then held the Rangers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. LCU scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Jacob Gutierrez, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Chaps.

LCU kept Regis scoreless before building their lead to 5-0 the following inning when Shea Bowen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. 

The LCU offense got back to work the next inning, notching two runs when a single from Van Maanen scored junior Brevin McCool and Ball, bringing the score to 7-0 in favor of the Chaps.

Regis got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning bringing the score to 7-1.

The Chaps scored again in the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 8-1, as Gutierrez drove in Frayner Chavez with an single to third base. 

Regis put three runs on the board in the bottom of the ninth, but the Chaps still coasted to the 8-4 win.

GAME NOTES

  • Every LCU starter reached base safely in the win.
  • Four Chaps had multiple hits in the ballgame, as Gutierrez, Ogilvie, Blair and Ball all recorded two or more knocks.
  • The Chaps out-hit the Rangers at a 14-8 clip.
  • LCU went 7-for-19 (.368) with runners in scoring position.
  • LCU pitchers faced 40 Regis hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out 10.
  • The Chaps drew four walks from Regis pitching.
  • In the second inning of today's game, Carson Ogilvie broke the LCU career doubles record, picking up his 67th double of his historic career. The previous record of 66 was held by LCU Hall-of-Honor member Tim Leslie who played for the Chaps from 1977-1980.
  • Regis was led offensively by junior Garrett Rede, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The Chaps continue South Central Regional play squaring off with a familiar foe in UT Permian Basin tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. from Hays Field.
