LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 4 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals hit six homers in route to a 20-13 victory over the UT Permian Basin Falcons Sunday afternoon. With the win the Chaps advance to the NCAA Division II Super Regional for the first time in program history.
Sophomore Coleson Abel (4-0) got the win out of the bullpen for LCU (44-14). The left-hander went 3.1 innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out four. Chris Shull also made an impact on the mound for the Chaps, the righty allowed five runs, four of which were earned, and struck out three in 4.1 innings of relief.
Junior Frayner Chavez led the Chaps in hits, going 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Jacob Gutierrez was a single away from the cycle, going 3-for-6 with a homer, triple, double, and three runs driven in.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chaps scored in six different innings on the way to the win. After holding the lead two different times earlier in the ballgame, LCU broke an 11-11 tie and took the lead for good at 12-11 in the seventh inning when senior Jarred Gibson came across to score.
GAME NOTES
- LCU's six home runs matches a season high in homers in a single game (Feb. 3 at Cameron).
- All six of LCU's roundtrippers were hit by different players, as Gutierrez (10), Carson Ogilvie (13), Ryan Ball (8), Jarred Gibson (4), Nate Van Maanen (10), and Shea Bowen (8) all left the yard.
- Every LCU starter reached base safely in the win.
- Six Chaparrals had multiple hits in the ballgame, as Chavez, Gutierrez, Ball, Bowen, Gibson, and Van Maanen all recorded two or more knocks.
- The Chaps out-hit the Falcons at a 19-15 clip. LCU racked up 46 total hits against Falcon pitching in their two meetings in the regional tournament.
- LCU went 8-for-16 (.500) with runners in scoring position.
- Chap pitchers faced 52 UT Permian Basin hitters in the game, allowing 13 ground balls and five fly balls while striking out seven.
- Chris Rhoades started on the mound for the Chaps, the junior allowed three runs, all earned, and walked two in 1.1 innings of action.
- LCU has now won 13 consecutive games.
- UTPB was led offensively by senior Austin Hall, who went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
UP NEXT
The Chaps advance to the NCAA Super Regional Tournament next weekend (May 24-25). LCU will host the tournament at Hays Field, welcoming the defending National Champion Angelo State Rams to town for a best 2-out-of-3 series. The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the NCAA Division II World Series.
