Chaps Host Defending National Champs Angelo State in NCAA Super Regional this weekend

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals continue their 2024 postseason journey at home this weekend in the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regional. The top-seeded Chaps welcome defending National Champion Angelo State to town for a best-of-three series with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division II World Series.

Game 1: Friday May 24 – 6:00 PM

Around the Horn
  • The Chaps enter the Super Regional with a 44-14 overall record and swept their way through the South Central Regional last weekend.
  • This is LCU's first NCAA Super Regional appearance in program history.
  • LCU is ranked 4th in the latest ABCA National Poll and 5th in the NCBWA National Poll.
  • As a team, LCU is hitting .348 with 490 RBIs and 89 home runs this season. The Chaps rank top-5 in the nation in batting average (5th .348), doubles (4th 143), hits (2nd 686), runs (5th 549), slugging percentage (3rd .593), triples (1st 37), and triples per game (1st .64).
  • The Chap pitching staff has a 6.43 ERA in 469 total innings of work. Opponents are hitting .279 off LCU pitchers and have struck out 455 times.
  • On Thursday, Carson Ogilvie and Brevin McCool were named NCBWA Second Team All-Americans. Jacob Gutierrez and Ryan Markwardt were honorable mentions.
The Series with Angelo State
Friday marks the 53rd all-time meeting between the Chaps and Rams. ASU has controlled the series holding a 34-18 all-time record against LCU, including winning eight of the last 10 meetings. The Chaps traveled to San Angelo earlier this season and split a four-game series with the Rams. LCU and ASU have met three times (2016, 2017, and 2019)  in NCAA Tournament games with the Rams winning all three matchups.

  • Angelo State comes into the weekend with a 39-18 overall record, sweeping their way through last weekend's regional in Grand Junction, Colo.
  • The Rams are the defending National Champions and have made three straight NCAA Division II World Series appearances.
  • ASU is in the 20th season with Head Coach Kevin Brooks at the helm.
  • The Rams have outscored their opponents 484 to 282 this season.
  • As a team, the Rams are hitting .321 with 436 RBIs and 41 homers in 2024.
  • Tripp Clark is leading the way at the plate for ASU, the first team All-American is hitting .448 with 13 home runs, and 83 RBIs coming into the weekend.
  • The ASU pitching staff comes into the weekend with a 4.77 ERA and 473 strikeouts in 451.1 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .261 with 45 homers and 179 walks against Ram pitching.
LCU in NCAA Tournament Games
This season marks the fifth time in program history LCU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament, appearing in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2023, and 2024. The Chaps are 6-8 all-time in NCAA Tournament games. The Chaps went 3-0 in last weekend's South Central Regional to advance to the first Super Regional in program history.
