LCU Earns 6-5 Walk-Off Victory Over UT Permian Basin in Opening Game of LSC Finals

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 4 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals rallied in the final inning to earn a 6-5 victory over UT Permian Basin Thursday night, senior catcher Jarred Gibson hit a walk-off single to secure the win for LCU.

Sophomore Coleson Abel (2-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for LCU (39-14). The left-hander went 2.2 shutout innings while giving up just one hit, allowing two walks and striking out four.

In the batter's box, the Chaparrals were paced by junior Brevin McCool, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Senior Carson Ogilvie put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI. Junior Shea Bowen also contributed for LCU, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding two walks and an RBI.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

With the game tied 1-1, LCU took their first lead of the game in the second inning, as Frayner Chavez scored on an RBI ground out off the bat of Hayden Blair

The Falcons took a 3-2 lead before LCU got on the board again, tying the game in the fourth inning. Bowen hit a single through the right side to drive in Nate Van Maanen.

Ogilvie hit an RBI single in the sixth to score Chavez and give the Chaps a 4-3 advantage. 

The lead did not last for long, as UTPB claimed a 5-4 lead in the seventh when a Jack Haggerty triple scored a pair for the Falcons. The Chaps answered right back in the bottom of the inning when McCool blasted a home run to left field to tie the game at five. 

The game remained tied heading into the bottom of the ninth. With two on and two outs Gibson singled to right field to give LCU the 6-5 walk-off victory. 

GAME NOTES

  • Junior Ryan Markwardt started on the mound for the Chaps. The lefty allowed five runs, all earned, walked three, and struck out six in 6.1 innings of work. 
  • The Chaps out-hit the Falcons at a 10-6 clip, Gibson, McCool, and Jacob Gutierrez lead the team with two hits a piece. 
  • LCU pitchers came up clutch in the win, limiting UTPB to just 2-for-11 (.182) with runners in scoring position.
  • Chap pitchers faced 39 Falcon hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out 10.
  • The Chaps drew eight walks from UTPB pitching, Ogilvie, Bowen, and Blair were walked two times each. 
  • LCU has now won eight straight games, their second longest winning streak of the season. 
  • The Chaps collected two extra base hits in the win, as Van Maanen tripled and McCool blasted his team leading 13th home run of the season. 
  • UTPB was led offensively by junior Jack Haggerty, who went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

UP NEXT
The Chaps advance to the winner's bracket of the LSC Tournament and will square off with 7th seeded Arkansas Fort Smith tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. from Hays Field.
