SAO JOSE, Brazil (August 9, 2023) – Lubbock Christian University continued their play at the inaugural Trimania International Women's Basketball Tournament Friday with a commanding 85-37 victory over AJBF Joinville, held at the Nedir Macedo Municipal Gymnasium in São José, Brazil. The Lady Chaps are the only 2-0 squad in the field and can sweep play Saturday, closing their exhibition slate against SR. Mampituba at 1:45 p.m. Central.
The team's balanced offense was spearheaded by
Grace Foster, who led all scorers with 15 points on 46% shooting, while also grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists.
Kennedy Chappell followed closely with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Taylor Thomas was nearly perfect from the field, scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, adding 2 assists and 2 rebounds.
Audrey Spurgin made her presence felt in the paint with 5 rebounds and 2 blocks, helping the Lady Chaps force 26 turnovers, which they converted into 28 points.
The bench was a major factor in the Lady Chaps' success, contributing 42 points.
Taylor Allen was a standout, contributing 11 points in just 16 minutes of play, while
Tia Johnson added 13 points and 4 rebounds.
Defensively, the Lady Chaps held AJBF Joinville to just 37 points, limiting them to 28% shooting from the field. The Lady Chaps were dominant in nearly every statistical category, including points in the paint (32 to 14), second-chance points (10 to 0), and fast break points (5 to 0).
Despite AJBF Joinville's efforts, including 12 points from Jamile Olga, the Lady Chaps' relentless pressure and efficient offense proved too much to handle. The Lady Chaps led by as many as 48 points during the game and finished with a 48-point differential.
This victory moves LCU into a 1:45 p.m. Central contest Saturday and can leave Sao Jose as the only unbeaten team in the tournament. SR. Mampituba is 1-1 in the tournament.
