LCU Aims for Third Straight Conference Opener Win as They Host Midwestern State

LUBBOCK, Texas – Lone Star Conference play opens Wednesday for Lubbock Christian University, as they host Midwestern State for a 5 p.m. start at LCU Soccer & Track Complex.

Notes:
  • LCU has opened the season with a 2-2-1 record, including two wins at home and two tough away losses to ranked teams including No.6 Colorado School of Mines. They now transition into Lone Star Conference play as they host Midwestern State.
  • Emma Wright has been a key player for LCU's defense, ranking 86th nationally and 8th in the conference with a 0.960 goals-against average. Her 0.846 save percentage ranks 53rd nationally and 5th in the conference, with 22 saves over five games.
  • LCU's offense has been relatively balanced, with Avery Jennings leading the team in assists per game, ranking 114th nationally and 8th in the conference with 0.40 assists per game. Jennings, along with Journey Curs and Ceci Madrid, has contributed key plays, each recording game-winning goals.
  • The Lady Chaps were picked to finish eighth in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll. LCU is in their first season with Alistair Caldwell at the helm.
  • LCU's shot accuracy has been a bright spot, ranking 68th nationally and 5th in the conference with a 0.538 shot-on-goal percentage. Despite not taking as many shots as their opponents (52 compared to 79), they've been efficient in hitting the target.
  • The Lady Chaps have shown resilience at home with a 2-0-1 record, scoring 6 goals and conceding 5 in total across five games. Notable home performances include a 3-1 win against New Mexico Highlands and a 2-0 shutout against Adams State.
  • LCU is 11-2-1 all-time in conference openers. They have won their prior two conference openers and are unbeaten in their last three (2-0-1). They have not lost a LSC opener since 2022 against Angelo State.
  • Lubbock Christian and Midwestern State have met five times in women's soccer since their first matchup on Sept. 19, 2014. LCU holds a 2-3 overall record against Midwestern State, as all contests have been one-goal games (scoring differential). Oct. 19, 2022 marks LCU's only home victory against Midwestern State (only prior meeting in Lubbock). LCU suffered a 1-0 loss in their most recent match on Oct. 31, 2023, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Overall, the games between these two teams have been tight, with LCU averaging 0.8 goals per game, while conceding five goals across the five matchups. The series is evenly split in conference play, with each team holding two wins apiece.
 
Scouting Midwestern State:
  • Midwestern State opened their 2024 season with an impressive 4-1-0 record, including a perfect 3-0 record at home. They secured notable wins, including a 6-1 victory against Western Colorado and a 1-0 win on the road against Oklahoma Baptist​.
  • The Mustangs are preseason picked No.5 in the LSC Women's Soccer Preseason Poll.
  • Madison Brinkley and Cassidy Savoy lead MSU's potent attack, with Brinkley ranking 26th nationally and first in the conference for total goals (4), while Savoy ranks 65th nationally with 3 goals. Brinkley and Savoy also contribute significantly in points, each recording 8 points, which ranks 60th nationally and third in the conference.
  • Allessandra Romano ranks 25th nationally and first in the conference in total assists with three assists over five games. This ranks her alongside teammate Cassidy Savoy, who has provided two assists, placing her 88th nationally.
  • Goalkeeper Allison Dellis has been a standout for the Mustangs, ranking 65th nationally and sixth in the conference with a 0.80 goals-against average. She also ranks 28th nationally and second in the conference with an impressive 0.892 save percentage, making 33 total saves, which leads the conference.
  • MSU is ranked 30th nationally and second in the conference for scoring offense with 2.40 goals per game. Brinkley and Savoy have been particularly efficient shooters, with Brinkley posting a 0.643 shot accuracy, ranking 57th nationally, while Savoy holds 0.533 accuracy. MSU also ranks 22nd nationally in shots on goal per game with 9.00.

A Win Would:
  • Bring LCU's season record to 3-2-1.
  • Place LCU with a 12-2-1 record in conference openers all-time (and wins in three consecutive conference openers).
  • Give the Lady Chaps their 124th win in program history.
  • Be the third win in the Coach Caldwell era.
