Lady Chaps Aim to Tame Falcons in Key West Division Matchup

ODESSA, Texas (January 16, 2025) – No. 16 Lubbock Christian University faces a tough stretch in Lone Star Conference play this week, as the unbeaten-in-division Lady Chaparrals hit the road for a pair of West Division matchups. LCU travels to Odessa Thursday to take on UT Permian Basin at 5:30 p.m., followed by a showdown in San Angelo Saturday at 1 p.m. against Angelo State. Both UTPB and ASU boast 4-1 West Division records and are hot on the trail of LCU in the standings.

WILD HORSES
Grace Foster's 30-point performance, highlighted by a career-best six three-pointers, led LCU to a dominant 68-42 win over Western New Mexico at Rip Griffin Center Saturday. The Lady Chaps (14-3, 8-1) earned their fourth straight victory, remaining unbeaten in West Division play (5-0) and tied atop the Lone Star Conference standings.
Audrey Robertson contributed 10 points, nine rebounds, and two steals, while Kennedy Chappell added eight points, four assists, and three steals. LCU drained 12 three-pointers, matching a season high, and forced 21 turnovers, converting them into 11 points. The Lady Chaps opened strong with an 11-0 run and held a 30-13 halftime lead. Foster exploded for 19 points in the third quarter, helping extend the margin to 53-30. The win also marked LCU's 15th consecutive victory over WNMU

1 > Grace Under Pressure: Grace Foster delivered another dominant performance, tying her season high with 30 points in the win over Western New Mexico. She is now the Lone Star Conference (LSC) leader in total points (316) and is second in points per game (18.6). Nationally, her 33 blocks rank 11th, and her 1.94 blocks per game place her 17th. Offensively, Foster continues to shine from the free-throw line, ranking second in the LSC in free-throw percentage (86.2%) and first in made free throws (75).
 
2 > On-Point: Maci Maddox remains a key playmaker for the Lady Chaps, leading the LSC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.39, 12th nationally). Her 3.9 assists per game rank second in the LSC. Maddox's steady hand has helped LCU lead the LSC in turnovers per game (13.2, 19th nationally). She also ranks second in the conference in minutes per game (35.8), showcasing her importance on the court.
 
3 > Defensive Lockdown: LCU's defense stifled Western New Mexico, forcing 21 turnovers—the most this season. The Lady Chaps rank third in the LSC and 16th nationally in field goal percentage defense (34.4%) and allow just 53.5 points per game (12th nationally). Grace Foster and Reese Schumann anchor LCU's interior defense, with the team leading the LSC in blocks per game (4.6, 12th nationally). The team tied its season high with 12 threes against Western New Mexico, marking the third consecutive game with 10 or more makes from deep. Audrey Robertson leads the LSC with a 46.7% clip (sixth nationally), while Foster adds a 45.1% mark (third in the LSC and 10th nationally).
 
MILESTONING 
Grace Foster continues to cement her place in Lubbock Christian University history, surpassing 1,500 career points—a milestone last reached by Allie Schulte on Feb. 3, 2022. Foster's 1,626 career points ranks 13th among active NCAA Division II players and places her within striking distance of the program's all-time top five scorers; she needs 100 points to overtake Emily Pool (Atkins) for fifth place. In addition, Foster has 748 career rebounds, which has her ranking fifth in program history. She needs 91 rebounds to pass Darla Lynch (838, 1979-83) to move into fourth in program history.  Audrey Robertson (sitting with 1,199 career points) joined Foster in the 1,000-point club in career points on Nov. 3, and Maci Maddox reached the mark Thursday becoming LCU's third active player with 1,000 career points. It marks the first time since the 2015-16 season that LCU has had a trio of 1,000-point scorers, following the legendary group of Haley Fowler, Nicole Hampton, and Kelsey Hoppel.
 
CONFERENCE CONVERSATION 
LCU holds an 8-1 record in Lone Star Conference play, leading the West Division with a perfect 4-0 divisional record. Grace Foster has been a dominant force in conference games, averaging 15.6 points (fifth in the LSC) and 6.4 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 52.4% from the field, 44.7% from beyond the arc, and 87.5% at the free-throw line. Audrey Robertson has also been a key contributor, averaging 11.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, with a 40.5% success rate from three-point range and 80.0% from the free-throw line. Defensively, the Lady Chaps have excelled, holding opponents to just 51.1 points per game on 32.9% shooting, including 29.8% from three-point range. Their interior defense has been outstanding, averaging 5.1 blocks per game, with notable rim protection from Foster and Reese Schumann. On offense, free-throw shooting remains a team strength at 77.6%, and LCU averages 14.2 made free throws per game. Grace Foster has also been solid in road play with 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while shooting an efficient 92.9% (13-of-14) from the free-throw line. Maci Maddox has chipped in 10.5 points per game while leading the team in assists with 18. On the defensive end, the Lady Chaps have limited opponents to 54.2 points per game and a 33.9% field goal percentage. The team has excelled in rim protection, averaging 6.3 blocks per game, with Foster and Reese Schumann leading the effort. The Lady Chaps have excelled with a scoring margin of +21.8 points per game, fueled by a balanced offensive attack averaging 72.4 points while limiting opponents to 50.6 points per contest. LCU's efficiency has been highlighted by a 45.0% field goal percentage and an impressive 80.6% free throw success rate. Grace Foster leads the team with 18.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, supported by standout performances from Maci Maddox (13.0 PPG) and Audrey Robertson (12.2 PPG). The squad is shooting 37.6% from outside, with Foster (12/23, 52.2%), Robertson (11/23, 47.8%) and Kimber Mathews (6/13, 46.2%) shooting over 45% from outside. Defensively, the Lady Chaps have controlled the boards with a +4.0 rebounding margin and forced 64 turnovers, complemented by 34 steals and 24 blocks. The 2024-25 season marks LCU's 12th since leaving the NAIA and LCU is 301-60 record (83.4%) in that span. In NCAA postseason play, the Lady Chaps are 24-4 all-time (85.7%).
 
BACK IN THE RANKINGS
Lubbock Christian University's women's basketball team entered the 2024-25 season ranked No. 17 in the D2CSC Women's Basketball Division II Top-25 Preseason Poll, a notable return to national prominence after an unusual preseason absence last year. They were receiving votes in the WBCA Preseason Poll (Division II).
 
In the latest polls, for both national Division II polling organizations, LCU is ranked No16 by the D2CSC and No.18 by the WBCA. LCU is 1-3 against nationally ranked programs this season and each have been against programs in the top-10 nationally.
 
FIVE THINGS ABOUT UTPB
1 > UT Permian Basin has enjoyed a strong 2024-25 season, boasting a 9-6 overall record (.600) and an impressive 7-2 mark in Lone Star Conference (LSC) play (.778). The Falcons are currently tied for second in the LSC West Division standings, trailing only undefeated Lubbock Christian (5-0 in division play). They are tied with Angelo State (4-1). UTPB has enjoyed their home-court advantage with a 6-2 record inside Falcon Dome. Key conference victories include a commanding 71-54 win over Texas A&M International and a high-scoring 87-79 triumph against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
While their conference performance has been a highlight, UTPB has faced challenges at neutral sites (0-2) and against top-tier teams, including a narrow 72-77 loss to West Texas A&M and a 65-68 defeat against Adams State.
 
2 > UTPB has excelled in LSC play this season, boasting a 7-2 record. The Falcons' offensive firepower is led by Taysha Rushton, who averages an impressive 17.6 points per game, shooting 41.1% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. Supporting her scoring efforts, Avalon Munoz contributes 9.4 points and leads the team in assists, averaging 5.1 per game. Khiara Flugence has been a dominant presence in the paint, averaging 9.6 rebounds and an efficient 67.3% shooting from the field, while Makala Bingley provides consistent scoring at 9.0 points per game. UTPB has established a scoring margin of +11.9 in conference games, highlighted by a balanced attack that averages 73 points per game while limiting opponents to 61.1. The Falcons' ability to dominate the boards, with a +4.8 rebound margin, and to protect the ball, forcing 5.3 more turnovers per game than they commit, has been key to their success. 5 > Taysha Rushton is vital to UTPB's success, consistently impacting multiple facets of the game. Rushton is also a consistent scoring threat, ranking third in the LSC and 79th nationally with 236 total points and 15.7 points per game. THE SERIES AGAINST UTPB
LCU is 29-1 all-time against the Falcons. The Lady Chaps won the first 29 games of the all-time series, but fell 57-52 in the prior meeting (Feb. 10, 2024 in Odessa). The loss placed LCU with an 11-1 mark against UTPB in Odessa and 17-1 all-time against the Falcons as conference opponents (1-0 against the Falcons in conference postseason play). LCU has played five of their last eight games against UTPB in Odessa. The two programs have been conference foes in both the Heartland and Lone Star Conference.

ODESSA, Texas (Feb. 10, 2024) – UTPB 57 – LCU 52
A strong third-quarter performance lifted Texas Permian Basin to a 57-52 victory over LCU in a battle for West Division supremacy at Falcon Dome. The Falcons (19-3, 14-2) used two 8-0 runs in the third quarter to outscore the Lady Chaps 18-9, turning a one-point halftime deficit into a 47-39 lead. LCU (16-7, 11-5) struggled offensively, shooting just 3-of-13 in the third and 1-of-12 in the fourth quarters, including 0-of-7 from beyond the arc. Despite holding UTPB without a field goal in the final 8:33, the Lady Chaps couldn't recover, as the Falcons secured the win at the free-throw line.
 
Audrey Robertson led LCU with 20 points, four assists, and three three-pointers, marking her sixth 20-point game of the season. Maci Maddox added 11 points and three steals, while Reese Schumann tallied nine points and six rebounds, including four offensive boards that helped LCU to a 7-3 edge in second-chance points. UTPB was paced by Andreea Mancha's 18 points and Alexus Qaadman's 12 rebounds.
 
The tightly contested first half featured 10 lead changes, with LCU capitalizing on turnovers and scoring seven points off UTPB miscues in the opening quarter. The Lady Chaps took a 30-29 lead into halftime, highlighted by Robertson's 10 first-half points and a late three-pointer from Maddox. However, UTPB's aggressive third-quarter run, fueled by free-throw opportunities, proved decisive.
 
The Lady Chaps were also hampered by 23 fouls, matching their season high. Robertson's 10 three-point attempts set a career high, though the team's overall shooting struggles proved costly. The defeat marked LCU's first loss to UTPB in 30 meetings, reducing their all-time record against the Falcons to 29-1. With the win, UTPB takes sole possession of first place in the West Division, while LCU fell to second.
