AUSTIN, Texas (October 4, 2025) — Lubbock Christian erased an early two-goal deficit, beating St. Edward's 3-2 on Saturday at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
The Chaparrals scored three unanswered goals in the second half to secure the victory. The game-winner was netted as part of a strong 14-shot second half for the Chaps, who managed to hold St. Edward's scoreless after the break.
The Chaps improved to 2-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play following the win. St. Edward's now stands at 3-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action.
The first half began with Lubbock Christian striving to establish a foothold in the match, as
Augusto Militao registered an early attempt that went wide.
Despite a save by
Connor Pettigrew on a shot from Matthew Devaney, St. Edward's capitalized shortly thereafter with Izaiah Garza finding the back of the net in the ninth minute, putting the Chaparrals behind 1-0.
Garza extended St. Edward's lead with a successful penalty kick in the 12th minute, challenging the Chaps to respond. Despite efforts from
Francisco Horta and
Kade McKinzie forcing saves from SEU goalkeeper Angel Ramirez, Lubbock Christian was unable to break through. The period closed with the Chaparrals trailing 2-0.
LCU quickly gained momentum in the second half, as
Aron DePaula got the Chaps on the board just six minutes in. As the period progressed, the team's offense continued to press, with multiple shots testing St. Edward's defense.
Jack Brassey leveled the match at 2-2 in the 81st minute following a shot by Horta that hit the woodwork.
The Chaps continued to apply pressure, and
Kade McKinzie secured the lead in the 85th minute with a goal assisted by
Manu Nunez. Lubbock Christian held on to this advantage to close the period, ending with a 3-2 lead over St. Edward's.
McKinzie's game-winner was his second goal of the season, and he led the Chaps with four shots, including three on target. DePaula contributed a goal and added one assist, enhancing the team's offensive efforts. Pettigrew made three saves in goal, helping secure the team's victory. Nunez provided an assist and managed to get two shots, one of which was on goal.
GAME NOTES:
- The Chaparrals won when allowing multiple goals for the first time since Oct. 9, 2024, when they beat Texas A&M International 4-3.
- DePaula's goal at the 51:14 mark broke Lubbock Christian's scoreless streak that dated back to the Sept. 6 game against Adams State. The Chaps went 599 minutes and 48 seconds between scores.
- All three goals were scored by first-time scorers on the season. Six different Chaps have now found the back of the net.
- The goals from DePaula and Brassey were both the first of their respective Chaparrals careers.
- Lubbock Christian was previously 0-3-2 when tied or trailing at half before Saturday's victory against St. Edward's.
