LUBBOCK, Texas (October 8, 2025) — Lubbock Christian University secured a 1-0 victory against Texas A&M International University on Wednesday at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
The decisive goal came in the first half, contributing to a shutout performance by the Lubbock Christian goalkeeper who made six saves across the match. Texas A&M International was unable to capitalize on their 12 shots, including six on target.
Lubbock Christian improved to 3-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play following their 1-0 victory. Texas A&M International fell to 2-3-5 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play with the loss.
The first half began with Lubbock Christian exerting early pressure, as
Jack Brassey and
Manu Nunez both forced saves from Texas A&M International's goalkeeper, Ioannis Koupepides, within the first five minutes. The Chaparrals maintained the offensive momentum, creating multiple shooting opportunities and earning several corner kicks throughout the half.
Connor Pettigrew stood firm in goal, denying multiple attempts by Texas A&M International, which played down a man after Gustavo Andres Suarez was assessed a red card at the 32:45 mark.
Just before the half ended, the Chaps capitalized on their persistent efforts. In the 44th minute, Brassey scored the lone goal of the half, just sneaking a shot through the TAMIU defenders and inside the right post.
Manu Nunez assisted to put the Chaps ahead.
The defense held strong, with Pettigrew making a crucial save in the final moments of the half, allowing Lubbock Christian to enter halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The second half began with the Chaps maintaining their defensive stance, as Pettigrew made a key save against a shot from Texas A&M International's Jonathan Cervantes in the 49th minute. Lubbock Christian generated numerous offensive opportunities, including shots by Brassey and
Francisco Horta, though they were unable to convert them into goals.
Despite persistent efforts, including a shot on target by
Kade McKinzie saved by Ioannis Koupepides, the half remained scoreless for both teams. Brassey looked to have a second goal midway through the half, taking an excellent through ball from Nunez and beating the TAMIU keeper, but it was called off after Video Assisted Review.
The best Dustdevil scoring chance came with just over a minute to go, as Shiloh Tolliver found himself with an open look, but he couldn't control the bouncing ball and shot wide. Lubbock Christian's defense held firm, managing to maintain their one-goal advantage from the first half. The match concluded with the Chaparrals leading 1-0.
GAME NOTES:
- LCU's 12 shots on goal marked a new season high. The last time they had 12 shots on goal was also against Texas A&M International, last season on Oct. 9, 2024
- Wednesday was the Chaps' fourth shutout of the season, one away from matching their 2024 season total of five
- Brassey's game-winner was the first of his collegiate career, coming just days after he scored the game-tying goal against St. Edward's
- Pettigrew's six saves matched his season-high, which he set exactly a week ago against St. Mary's
- With seven points, Lubbock Christian remains tied with West Texas A&M atop the Lone Star Conference standings
