Meekins’ Buzzer-Beater Stuns SWOSU as No. 7 LCU Escapes Weatherford

Freshman’s Clutch Three Lifts Lady Chaps to 7–0 Start After Three-Games-in-Four-Days Swing

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (November 24, 2025) – No. 7 Lubbock Christian University closed a grueling three-games-in-four-days stretch in dramatic fashion Monday evening, as freshman Meg Meekins buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Lady Chaps to a 62–61 road win over Southwestern Oklahoma State inside the Pioneer Cellular Events Center. LCU improved to 7–0 heading into next week's Lone Star Conference opener.

Meekins, who was named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, delivered another electric performance with 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three—her third straight game with at least five made threes, marking the first such streak in LCU's NCAA era. Her final shot came off a kick-out pass (from the interior from Kennedy Chappell) with under a second remaining, erasing a one-point deficit after SWOSU's Sincere Jackson had put the Bulldogs ahead in the final minute.

LCU knocked down a season-high 12 three-pointers and received a career-best 15 points from senior forward Tia Johnson, who also added three rebounds. Junior guard Kennedy Chappell finished with 11 points and six assists, marking her sixth double-figure outing in seven games. Martie McCoy posted seven rebounds and a team-leading four steals.

SWOSU (2–2) was powered by a standout 23-point, eight-rebound effort from Sincere Jackson and held a 36–10 scoring advantage in the paint, but the Bulldogs managed just 3-of-18 from three-point range (16.7%). LCU overcame a rare 15–0 deficit in points off turnovers and nine lead changes to secure its seventh straight win in the series.

How It Happened
Lubbock Christian and Southwestern Oklahoma State opened the game with a tightly contested first quarter, which ended with Southwestern Oklahoma State leading 12-8. SWOSU's Sincere Jackson scored the first basket with a tip-in at 9:06, while Elle Papahronis contributed four points from free throws. Meg Meekins led the Lady Chaps' scoring with a three-pointer at 5:37, assisted by Martie McCoy, and added a jumper to tie the game at 8-8 with 3:36 remaining. However, the Bulldogs pulled ahead with baskets from Landry Allen and Maebry Shields, the latter scoring a fastbreak layup with 1:13 on the clock. Meekins had five points to lead LCU through the opening 10 minutes.

Kennedy Chappell of the Lady Chaps started the second quarter with a three-pointer, assisted by McCoy, to bring the score to 11-12. SWOSU maintained a slim lead, highlighted by Jackson's tip-in at 6:55, pushing their advantage to 15-11. Despite turnovers and fouls from both teams, Maddie Moyers closed the quarter with a crucial three-pointer at the buzzer, assisted by Chappell, narrowing the Bulldogs' lead to 22-21. The Chaparrals outscored SWOSU 13-10 in the quarter. SWOSU was 0-of-6 from long-range at the half. Moyers, hitting a pair of three-pointers in the period, led LCU in the frame with six points. She joined Chappell co-leading the team in scoring in the opening half (each had six points in the first half).

Lubbock Christian took control early in the third quarter with Meekins sinking a three-pointer assisted by Chappell, giving them a 24-22 lead. Tia Johnson extended the advantage with a three-point play, making it 28-24. SWOSU's Jackson kept it close with consecutive scoring efforts, including a tip-in to narrow the gap to 30-26. In the final minutes, Kimber Mathews and Meekins each added crucial three-pointers, helping the Lady Chaps secure a 42-36 lead by the quarter's end. Despite several turnovers, the Chaps maintained their edge, outscoring SWOSU 21-14 in the quarter behind 13 points in the frame combined from Tia Johnson (7) and Meekins (6). Jackson produced 11 in the quarter for SWOSU.

In a tense final quarter, the Lady Chaps secured a narrow 62-61 victory over the Bulldogs. Papahronis of SWOSU tied the game at 42-42 with a three-pointer at 9:15, but Johnson of Lubbock Christian responded with consecutive free throws to regain the lead. Inside the final three minutes LCU twice led by four points, but SWOSU answered three-pointers from Meekins and Chappel.  As time wound down, Jackson put SWOSU ahead by one with a layup at the 39-second mark. They added to the lead with a free-throw from Jackson with eight seconds left. Off an inbounds play, Meekins of the Chaps hit a decisive three-pointer at the buzzer, assisted by Chappell, clinching the win for the visiting team.
