Lady Chaps Set For Home Opener, Look to Stay Hot Against Adams State

LCU Opens Home Slate Against Adams State in Lubbock Sports Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 6, 2025) – The Lady Chaparrals open their home slate at Manor Park Thursday (3 p.m.), hosting Adams State in the opening game of the Lubbock Sports Collegiate Invitational. Lubbock Christian University enters the matchup riding a three-game win streak.

LCU and ASU Series Snapshot
  • This contest will mark the third-ever meeting between LCU and Adams State as LCU has a 2-0 all-time series advantage.
  • The prior meeting was part of the 2023 Lubbock Sports collegiate Invitational, as LCU defeated ASU 10-2 (Feb. 10, 2023) and 9-1 (Feb. 11, 2023) in five innings.
  • Ashlinn Hamilton appeared in both contests, going 5.0 innings (complete game) in the 10-2 win and allowed two runs while striking out six batters. She pitched a scoreless inning in relief to close the 9-1 win.

Season Tidbits
  • The Lady Chaps are 4-1 on the season after a strong showing at the Gulf Shores Invitational, securing three straight wins to close out the tournament.
  • Kawehi Ili has been a force at the plate, hitting .625, which ranks 37th nationally and third in the Lone Star Conference (LSC). She also leads LCU with four stolen bases, leading the LSC in stolen base percentage (1.000).
  • Baylea Myers leads the team in total bases (13) and home runs (1). She has also been the toughest batter to strike out, ranking first in the LSC and nationally in that category (0.0 K per AB).
  • LCU ranks 17th nationally and fourth in the LSC in scoring, averaging 7.6 runs per game.
  • The Lady Chaps rank 34th nationally and 6th in the LSC in on-base percentage (.425), with Ili leading the team (.700 OBP, 24th nationally and third in the LSC).
  • Kendall Ward has dominated in the circle, leading the LSC and the nation in walks allowed per seven innings (0.00) while also leading in the LSC in ERA (0.00).
  • Emily Dix has been LCU's top strikeout pitcher, averaging 9.2 K per seven innings (32nd nationally, eighth in LSC).
  • LCU's defense has been solid, ranking 46th nationally and seventh in the LSC in fielding percentage (.975).
  • The Lady Chaps rank fifth nationally and lead the LSC in sacrifice flies (6). All six are from six different individuals.
  • LCU's pitching staff ranks seventh in the LSC in hits allowed per seven innings (8.56).
  • The team has shown patience at the plate, ranking tenth nationally and second in the LSC with 22 walks drawn.

Home Openers
  • LCU is 15-2 all-time in home openers at PlainsCapital Park.
  • The two losses have come in their two recent openers, as LCU fell to Washburn in 2023 and Oklahoma Christian last season.
  • The prior two season openers, both Washburn and OC were nationally ranked. Adams State is not nationally ranked.
  • LCU enters this season with an all-time mark of 327-57 (85.2%) all-time in home games at Maner Park. They went 15-6 last season at home.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 15th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Thursday with a softball record of 556-197.
  • Along with surpassing 550 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record. Combine the two sports and Hays has coached in 1,224 total games at LCU. 
 
Looking at ASU
  • The Grizzlies went 5-48 last season, going 3-41 in RMAC play to finish 12th in the conference.
  • ASU opened their season last week at the South-Central Region Crossover in Los Lunas, N.M., where they went 1-4.
  • Adams State is projected to finish 12th in the 12-team RMAC Preseason Poll.
  • Following this tournament in Lubbock, ASU heads home to host Black Hills State (Feb. 15) to open RMAC play.
  • It has been a rough start for the Grizzlies, as they have been outscored 75-9 in five games on the season. In the mix was a 30-0 loss to West Texas A&M.
  • Kaylee Eyl is hitting .500 for the Grizzlies (5-for-10).
  • The Grizzlies are hitting .243 as a team.
  • ASU pitchers have a staff ERA of 15.88, as opponents are hitting .469 against them this season.
