No. 2-Seed LCU Faces UCCS in NCAA South Central Regional Opener

DENTON, Texas (March 14, 2025) – In just their 10th season of NCAA Division II postseason eligibility since transitioning from the NAIA, Lubbock Christian University is set for its ninth NCAA tournament appearance. The No. 2-seeded Lady Chaparrals will open the 2025 NCAA Division II South Central Regional Friday, facing No. 7-seed Colo. Colorado Springs (UCCS) at Texas Woman's Kitty Magee Arena, with tipoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

THE "IF's"
IF LCU WINS:
If the Lady Chaps defeats UCCS, they will improve to 30-4 on the season and will advance to the tournament Semifinals game to face either No.3-seed UT Tyler or No.6-seed UT Tyler Saturday at 5 p.m. in Denton.
 
IF LCU LOSES:
If the Lady Chaps fall to the Mountain Lions, their record will drop to 29-5, they will be eliminated from the tournament and they will suffer their fourth NCAA regional loss in program history and will have their all-time NCAA postseason record move to 24-5 all-time.
 
FALLING IN FRISCO
No. 2-seeded and eighth-ranked LCU battled No. 1 Texas Woman's in a thrilling Lone Star Conference Championship showdown Sunday, featuring 14 lead changes and an overtime finish. In the end, the Pioneers secured a 73-66 victory inside Comerica Center. Maci Maddox led LCU with a career-high 26 points, while Grace Foster recorded a double-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. A game-changing five-second violation in the final seconds led to TWU's game-tying basket, forcing overtime, where the Pioneers took control with a 7-0 run. Foster and Maddox earned LSC All-Tournament Team honors.

RECOGNITION
Grace Foster headlined the Lone Star Conference awards, earning Player of the Year, Academic Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, and All-Defensive Team honors. Lady Chaps coach Steve Gomez was named Noel Johnson Head Coach of the Year, while Maci Maddox (First Team) and Audrey Robertson (Second Team) also received recognition. Foster, LCU's all-time scoring leader, averaged 19.9 points per game in the regular season while maintaining a 4.00 GPA. Maddox leads the LSC in assist-to-turnover ratio, and Robertson, who was also named to the All-Academic Team, ranks among the league's top three-point shooters. Gomez, in his 22nd season, secured his seventh conference Coach of the Year award.
 
BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE
Grace Foster was named the South Central Region Most Outstanding Player for the second time, while teammate Maci Maddox earned Second Team honors on the 2024-25 Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-Region Team. LCU was the only program with multiple recipients this season.
 
Foster becomes LCU's first two-time Most Outstanding Player and the program's fifth recipient of the honor. Maddox claims her first All-Region selection.

RANKINGS
Lubbock Christian University moved to No. 2 in the latest NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings, released March 5, with Texas Woman's taking over the top spot. The rankings, which list teams in order, have LCU firmly in second, followed by UT Tyler, Colorado Mesa, and Eastern New Mexico rounding out the top five. West Texas A&M, Adams State, Angelo State, Black Hills State, and CSU Pueblo complete the top 10. The final regional rankings, set for release Sunday after conference tournaments, will determine the eight teams advancing to the regional tournament, with the top seed earning hosting rights.

1 > Grace's Greatness: Grace Foster continues to dominate as the Lone Star Conference's top scorer, now leading with 666 total points (3rd nationally, 1st in LSC) and increasing her scoring average to 20.2 PPG (11th nationally, 2nd in LSC). She remains the conference's most efficient three-point shooter, leading the LSC in three-point percentage (45.2%, 4th nationally) and three-pointers made (76, 18th nationally). Foster also excels at the free-throw line, leading the LSC in total free throws made (154, 9th nationally) and ranking second in free-throw percentage (88.0%, 14th nationally). In LCU's semifinal victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville, Foster delivered a dominant 28-point, 12-rebound double-double, propelling the Lady Chaps into the LSC Championship title game.

2 > Maddox Magic: Maci Maddox continues to shine as one of the nation's most efficient playmakers, leading the LSC and ranking 5th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.49). She also tops the conference in assists per game (4.0, 58th nationally) and total assists (132, 32nd nationally). Maddox has been crucial in LCU's postseason success, contributing 13 points and four assists in the semifinal win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. She remains one of the LSC's most utilized players, averaging 36.43 minutes per game (19th nationally, 2nd in LSC), ensuring her presence is felt on both ends of the court

3 > Defensive Lockdown: LCU's defense continues to stifle opponents, ranking 3rd in the LSC and 9th nationally in scoring defense (53.0 PPG allowed). The Lady Chaps also rank 2nd in the LSC in blocks per game (4.0, 37th nationally) and 3rd in field-goal percentage defense (35.7%, 28th nationally). In their semifinal victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville, LCU's defense played a key role, holding TAMUK to 54 points while registering five blocks, including three from Reese Schumann. The Lady Chaps also controlled the boards, out-rebounding TAMUK 35-26, with Foster leading the charge with 12 rebounds.
 
4 > Charity: LCU remains one of the top free-throw shooting teams in the nation, ranking 2nd in the LSC and 16th nationally in free-throw percentage (78.1%). Foster continues to lead the team, ranking 1st in the LSC in total free throws made (154, 9th nationally) and 2nd in percentage (88.0%, 14th nationally). The Lady Chaps' efficiency at the line proved crucial in their semifinal victory, with clutch free throws helping them fend off a Texas A&M-Kingsville comeback. Historically, LCU shoots 78.8% from the line in the LSC Championships, with Foster boasting a career tournament free-throw percentage of 88.9% (24-of-27), the third-best all-time for LCU in the event.
 
5 > Deep Threat Duo: LCU remains a premier three-point shooting team, leading the LSC and ranking 4th nationally in three-point percentage (37.6%). Foster continues to lead the conference at 45.2% (4th nationally), while Audrey Robertson ranks 4th in the LSC at 41.6%. The duo has combined for 138 made threes, with Foster ranking 1st in the LSC (76, 18th nationally) and Robertson 4th (62, 64th nationally). Their perimeter shooting played a pivotal role in LCU's semifinal victory, as Robertson knocked down two critical three-pointers in the first half to help the Lady Chaps build an early lead over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
 
MILESTONING 
Grace Foster continues to cement her place in Lubbock Christian University history, surpassing 1,500 career points—a milestone last reached by Allie Schulte on Feb. 3, 2022. Foster's 1,974 career points ranks eighth among active NCAA Division II players, and Feb. 13, she passed Nicole Hampton's all-time scoring mark (1,796 points from 2011-16) and also surpassed 1,800 career points. In addition, Foster has 870 career rebounds, which has her ranking third in program history. She needs 42 rebounds to pass Mamy N'Kolomoni (911, 1998-02) to move into second in program history. Audrey Robertson (sitting with 1,346 career points) joined Foster in the 1,000-point club in career points on Nov. 3, and Maci Maddox reached the mark Jan. 9 becoming LCU's third active player with 1,000 career points (has 1,210). It marks the first time since the 2015-16 season that LCU has had a trio of 1,000-point scorers, following the legendary group of Haley Fowler, Nicole Hampton, and Kelsey Hoppel. Additionally for Maddox, she is fourth all-time in career assists (439, ranks 17th actively in DII) and needs one to pass Haley Burton (439 from 2010-15) to move into third all-time in program history. As for Robertson, she is actively second in all of Division II with 154 games played and is a game away from tying Allie Schulte for the program's career record for games played (155).

CONFERENCE CONVERSATION 
LCU finished 21-1 in Lone Star Conference play, tying with Texas Woman's for the best conference record, while going a perfect 14-0 in West Division games to secure their third regular-season LSC title. Grace Foster led LCU, averaging 19.1 points per game (second in the LSC) and 7.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 51.9% from the field, 49.0% from three-point range (first in the LSC), and 88.4% from the free-throw line (first in the LSC). Maci Maddox contributed 12.2 points per game and led the LSC in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.2) while ranking second in assists per game (4.1). Audrey Robertson added 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, shooting 41.8% from three-point range. LCU finished second in the LSC in scoring defense (52.9 PPG allowed) and led the conference in three-point percentage (37.7%), while ranking third in free-throw percentage (77.7%) and second in blocks per game (3.8). The Lady Chaps also posted a +16.3 scoring margin for the season.
 
TOURNEY TALK
Lubbock Christian is shooting 47.7% all-time in NCAA South Central Regional games, while holding opponents to a 38.4% shooting mark from the field and a 26.7% shooting woe from long range. Former Lady Chaps Maddi Chitsey is LCU's all-time leading scorer in regional action (in average scoring), averaging 17.2 points per game (she played in six career NCAA regional contests) and compiling 103 points. Allie Schulte is LCU's career leader in overall points scored in regional play with 109 career points in 11 career games. Schulte is also LCU's all-time leader in NCAA postseason scoring with 205 career points (in 18 games, which is the highest amount of postseason games played by a Lady Chap).

Lubbock Christian has posted a solid 6-3 record in neutral-site games this season, outscoring opponents by an average margin of 9.3 points per game (64.3 to 55.0). The Lady Chaps remain efficient on both ends, shooting 44.3% from the field and 36.5% from three while holding opponents to just 36.7% overall and 28.8% from deep. Grace Foster leads the team with 21.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, while Audrey Robertson contributes 12.2 points on 52.0% shooting, including a team-best 51.4% from beyond the arc. LCU also holds a +2.0 rebounding edge, averages 12.4 assists, and records 4.2 blocks per game.

The 2024-25 season marks LCU's 12th since leaving the NAIA and LCU is 316-61 record (83.8%) in that span. In NCAA postseason play, the Lady Chaps are 24-4 all-time (85.7%).

Lubbock Christian University's women's basketball team entered the 2024-25 season ranked No. 17 in the D2CSC Women's Basketball Division II Top-25 Preseason Poll, a notable return to national prominence after an unusual preseason absence last year. They were receiving votes in the WBCA Preseason Poll (Division II).
 
LCU is ranked No. 10 (D2CSC) and No.11 (WBCA) in the national polls this week. This season, LCU holds a 1-3 record against nationally ranked opponents, with all matchups coming against top-10 programs.
 
FIVE THINGS ABOUT UCCS
1 > The Mountain Lions enter the NCAA Division II Tournament riding high after capturing their second-ever RMAC Tournament championship. UCCS clinched the title in thrilling fashion, defeating top-seeded Colorado Mesa 63-61 on a last-second shot. This marks the program's fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, with the team looking to build on its recent postseason success.

Senior forward Maison White and standout guard Amyah Moore Allen have been the driving forces behind UCCS this season. White, a dominant presence in the paint, averages a double-double with 12.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, while Moore Allen ranks fourth in the RMAC in scoring at 19.2 points per contest, as she recently claimed All-Region honors. Both earned All-RMAC honors, with Moore Allen named Tournament MVP after her game-winning heroics in the RMAC title game.

3 > UCCS has established itself as one of the top defensive teams in the RMAC, allowing just 63.4 points per game (fourth in the conference) and holding opponents to 38.8% shooting from the field. The Mountain Lions also rank second in the RMAC in blocked shots per game (3.3), with White and Moore Allen combining for 42 blocks this season.

4 > Rebounding has been a key factor for UCCS, particularly on the offensive glass, where they rank fifth in the RMAC with 10.7 offensive rebounds per game. The numbers do help their overall rebounding margin (-1.6, ninth in the RMAC).

5 > UCCS has thrived in tight contests this season, posting an 8-3 record in games decided by five points or fewer. The Mountain Lions' composure in late-game situations was on full display during their RMAC Tournament run, as they secured back-to-back one-possession victories, including the championship-winning buzzer-beater.

THE SERIES AGAINST UCCS
The Lady Chaps and UCCS have met seven times previously, including this season when LCU secured a 78-56 home victory over the Mountain Lions on Nov. 16, 2024, behind 20 points from Grace Foster, 16 from Maci Maddox, and 12 from Audrey Robertson. The previous six meetings all came under head coach Steve Gomez. LCU holds a 6-1 all-time record against UCCS, including a 2-0 mark in Lubbock. The teams first met on Dec. 12, 1989, in Colorado Springs, where LCU earned a 97-67 win fueled by Burgundy Bass's 29-point performance. This matchup marks the first postseason meeting between the programs. They are 1-1 in neutral-site contests, with LCU defeating UCCS 91-73 on Nov. 22, 2008, in Alamosa, Colo., while UCCS claimed a 93-90 win on Nov. 14, 2014, in Golden, Colo.

No. 12 Lubbock Christian University dominated their home opener with a 78-56 victory over UCCS at Rip Griffin Center.
 
The Lady Chaps (5-0) were nearly perfect from the free-throw line (28-of-30) and efficient from deep (8-of-16) as they controlled the game from start to finish.
 
Grace Foster led LCU with 20 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, while Maci Maddox added 16 points, five assists, and two steals. Audrey Robertson contributed 12 points, hitting 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. LCU outrebounded UCCS 43-30, with five players grabbing at least five boards.
 
LCU set the tone early, using an 8-0 run to break a 7-7 tie in the first quarter. The Lady Chaps forced UCCS into eight turnovers in the opening period, converting them into an 8-0 advantage in points off turnovers. They extended their lead to 36-28 at halftime despite a push from UCCS, which cut the deficit to eight before the break. Foster led the charge in the third quarter, shooting 4-of-6 from the field and helping LCU build a 19-point lead heading into the final period.
 
The Lady Chaps sealed the win with a 6-0 run late in the fourth, extending their lead to 25 before cruising to the finish. Thirteen players saw the floor in the final quarter, with eight getting on the scoreboard. LCU's defense held UCCS to just 34.5% shooting, including a 3-of-16 effort from three-point range.
