No. 5 LCU Rallies Past No. 15 MSU for Historic First Win Over Mustangs

LCU Overcomes Doubles Sweep, Wins Four Singles Matches to Extend Streak

LUBBOCK, Texas (March 28, 2025) – No. 5 Lubbock Christian University overcame an early deficit in doubles play, winning four of six singles matches to secure a 4-3 victory over No. 15 Midwestern State in their Lone Star Conference opener at Penny Gullo Tennis Center. The win extended LCU's win streak to 13 consecutive wins in duals play.

Midwestern State (9-3, 1-1 LSC) seized early control by sweeping the doubles point. The Mustangs struck first on Court 3, as Juan Duque and Killian Guillou dispatched LCU's Pablo Segura and Andres De Los Rios 6-3. The No. 2 tandem of Bruno Sanchez and Justin Van Amerongen clinched the doubles point for MSU with a 6-3 win over Mattia Ghedin and Marco Seccia. At the top doubles flight, MSU's nationally ranked duo of Stephen Slocombe and Filip Vacula (No. 19) completed the sweep with a commanding 6-1 victory over LCU's Kelly Giese and Jordan Georgiev.

Facing a 1-0 deficit, Lubbock Christian (14-1, 1-0 LSC) responded in singles play. De Los Rios delivered a dominant 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jose Marquez on Court 4 to even the match at 1-1. However, MSU reclaimed the lead with a strong performance on Court 2, as Sanchez (No. 32) powered past Segura 6-2, 6-4.

Giese, ranked No. 17 in the nation, provided a pivotal win at the top singles spot, stunning MSU's No. 11-ranked Vacula in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, to level the match at 2-2. The Mustangs once again answered back on Court 3, where Slocombe battled back from a set down to defeat Ghedin (No. 46) 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, putting MSU ahead 3-2.

LCU needed both remaining matches to clinch the dual, and the Chaparrals delivered. On Court 6, Blas Ruiz Romero edged Duque (No. 34) in a three-set thriller, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, bringing the match to a decisive 3-3 tie. The outcome came down to Court 5, where Seccia completed LCU's comeback with a gutsy 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Van Amerongen, sealing the 4-3 victory.

Giese's singles victory placed him with a 2-2 record against nationally ranked opponents. He won his sixth consecutive singles match and improved to 14-7 overall this season (in singles).

LCU improved to 1-3 all-time against MSU, as the victory was LCU's first-ever win over the Mustangs. The Chaps improved to 4-0 against nationally ranked opponents (this season), and they face another ranked foe Saturday at 2 p.m. facing No.38 Cameron at Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
