LCU is ranked No. 8 (D2CSC) and No.11 (WBCA) in the national polls this week. This season, LCU holds a 1-3 record against nationally ranked opponents, with all matchups coming against top-10 programs.
FIVE THINGS ABOUT WTAMU
1 > West Texas A&M wrapped up the regular season with an 18-11 overall record and a 12-10 mark in Lone Star Conference play, finishing tied for fourth in the West Division standings. The Lady Buffs have been dominant at home, posting a 12-4 record at the First United Bank Center, but have struggled on the road (4-7). WT has shown resilience, securing key wins over Midwestern State, UT Permian Basin, and Angelo State, but inconsistency has plagued them, including a recent loss to Eastern New Mexico. As they prepare for the LSC Tournament, the Lady Buffs look to regain momentum in a pivotal matchup against second-seeded Lubbock Christian, a team they lost to twice in the regular season.
2 > West Texas A&M is a familiar sight in the Lone Star Conference Tournament, making their 32nd consecutive appearance and 37th overall, the most of any LSC program. Their dominant history includes a 61-20 all-time record in the tournament, with 16 championships and 23 title game appearances, solidifying their reputation as one of the conference's most successful programs.
3 > WT features multiple All-Lone Star Conference honorees, including Kyla Kane, who earned All-LSC Second Team honors, and Randi Harding and Claire Graham, both named to the Third Team. Kane, in particular, has been a key contributor, recently recording a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in the Lady Buffs' final regular-season game.
4 > The Lady Buffs have built their success on a strong defensive identity, holding opponents to just 56.3 points per game in conference play. Even in their recent loss to Eastern New Mexico, WT showcased their defensive toughness, limiting their opponent to just 56 points while forcing multiple turnovers. With a disciplined defensive approach and the ability to stifle opposing offenses, the Lady Buffs remain a tough matchup for any team in the LSC Tournament.
5 > West Texas A&M has established itself as a force on the boards, ranking 44th nationally and second in the Lone Star Conference in defensive rebounds per game (28.0). The Lady Buffs' ability to clean the glass has played a crucial role in their defensive efforts, limiting opponents' second-chance opportunities. While their offensive rebounding numbers are more middle-of-the-pack (163rd nationally, sixth in the LSC at 10.9 per game), their overall rebounding effort ranks them 91st in the country and fifth in the conference at 38.9 per game. Taylor Haggan leads the individual effort, ranking 11th in the LSC with 7.0 rebounds per game and inside the top 150 nationally in total boards.
THE SERIES AGAINST WTAMU
Lubbock Christian swept West Texas A&M in the regular seasons Rivalry on the Range series this season, winning 70-56 in Canyon on Jan. 5 and 59-44 in Lubbock on Jan. 30. In the first matchup,
Audrey Robertson's 19 points and
Maci Maddox's 18-point, 10-assist double-double led LCU to victory, while WT struggled with 31.7% shooting. The rematch saw
Grace Foster dominate with 30 points and 14 rebounds. The Lady Chaps' defense held WT to just 5.9% from three in Game 2. With the sweep, LCU improved to 12-6 all-time against WT, winning four straight and sweeping the series for a second consecutive season.
LCU and WT are separated by 110 miles, but the two teams have only met 18 prior times (15 meetings since 2020). Of their 18 prior meetings, three have been in NCAA postseason play (LCU has 2-1 record in NCAA postseason play) and two have been in the Lone Star Conference Championships (both in Frisco). Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M have split their two Lone Star Conference Championship meetings in Frisco. In 2020, LCU's guard play fueled a 59-46 semifinal win, securing a spot in the title game. Two years later, WT avenged the loss, edging LCU 63-58 in another semifinal battle. That game featured 13 lead changes, with WT pulling away late despite 29 combined points from Allie Schulte and Channing Cunyus. The loss was LCU's first-ever in the LSC tournament.
