LUBBOCK, Texas (April 3, 2025) – No. 5 Lubbock Christian University extended its impressive season with a commanding 7-0 sweep over No. 47 St. Mary's in a Lone Star Conference dual Thursday afternoon at Penny Gullo Tennis Center. The Chaparrals (16-1, 3-0 LSC) displayed their depth and resilience, securing the doubles point before sweeping all six singles matches against the Rattlers (7-6, 2-1 LSC).
LCU struck first in doubles as the No. 40-ranked tandem of
Kelly Giese and
Jordan Georgiev took down Leonardo Fabbri and Alvaro Soler 6-4 at the top spot. St. Mary's responded at No. 2 doubles, where Lu Castillo Sanchez and Pierre Copin outlasted
Mattia Ghedin and
Marco Seccia 7-5. With the doubles point on the line,
Pablo Segura and
Andres De Los Rios delivered a clutch 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 3 doubles over Lincoln Baldonado and Bernhard Hauer to give LCU the early 1-0 advantage.
The Chaparrals carried that momentum into singles play, where Georgiev quickly put LCU ahead 2-0 with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win over Hauer at No. 5 singles.It was Georgiev's first LSC singles match this season. Ghedin followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Soler at No. 3 singles, while
Blas Ruiz Romero secured the clinching fourth point with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Baldonado at No. 6 singles.
Though the match was decided, LCU continued its strong performance. Giese, ranked No. 12 nationally, defeated Fabbri 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles to extend the lead. De Los Rios battled back from a first-set loss to claim a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Copin at No. 4 singles. In the final match of the afternoon, Segura closed out the sweep with a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles against Castillo Sanchez.
LCU's depth proved vital in the victory, as five of its six singles players recorded straight-set wins. Key contributors included Giese and Georgiev, who both went 2-0 on the day, as well as Segura and De Los Rios, who delivered crucial three-set victories. Giese won his eighth consecutive singles match, which has him 16-7 overall on the season (11-5 in duals). Segura claimed his team-leading 22
nd singles win of the season (22-5).
The Chaparrals, winners of 15 straight duals, improved to 6-0 against nationally ranked foes this season. They also claimed their fifth shutout of the season (third 7-0 decision) and 11
th in program history (eighth with 7-0 decision). LCU remains home Sunday and will host UT Permian Basin at an estimated 3 p.m. start, as they will begin the Lone Star Conference dual immediately following the women's dual at Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
