LUBBOCK, Texas (May 2, 2025) – In a game they trailed by as many as eight runs and were losing by five entering the bottom of the ninth, Lubbock Christian came all the way back and won 11-10 against West Texas A&M Friday night at Hays Field.
Â
The Chaps caught a break to start the bottom of the ninth, as
Shea Bowen drove a ball to the warning track in left field that was dropped by the WT fielder. LCU followed with three straight singles, scoring a pair of runs and chasing Buff reliever Davis Luikart from the game for Max Lankford.
Â
Kyle Lewis and
Brock Tijerina greeted the new pitcher with singles of their own, bringing the Chaps within a run.
Carson Shields came on to pinch run for Tijerina before Lewis scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Adam Garcia moved him to third with a bunt single, and
Frayner Chavez won the Chaps the game with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Â
It is the third walkoff of the season for Chavez, who also drew a walkoff walk against Angelo State on March 9 and hit a walkoff double against Texas A&M-Kingsville on March 22.
Â
Cadon Everett (4-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Lubbock Christian (32-19). The right-hander went 1.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit, one walk and striking out one.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Julius Carpio got the start for the Buffs and was excellent through the first five innings, keeping the Chaps off the scoreboard while WT built up an 8-0 lead. Most of that lead came in the second inning, when they plated six against Ryan Markward, three of which were unearned.
Â
They added another pair in the fourth, one of which was unearned, as Carpio continued to shut out Lubbock Christian.
Â
LCU finally got to him in the bottom of the sixth. Bowen led off with a walk, followed by a McCool double and a triple from
Jacob Gutierrez. Lewis and Tijerina also had RBI in the frame, forcing Carpio from the game, but the new reliever got three straight outs to end the Chap threat.
Â
WT added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth, all without a hit. Instead, they used three walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches to score before
Cadon Everett got them out of the inning.
Â
Everett tossed another scoreless frame in the top of the ninth, setting up LCU's comeback in the bottom of the inning.
