Lady Chaps Face Top-Seeded West Texas A&M With First LSC Semifinal Win on the Line, as Rivals Meet For First Time in Postseason

CANYON Texas (May 2, 2025) – No.5-seed Lubbock Christian University will seek its first-ever semifinal victory in the Lone Star Conference Softball Championships Friday, facing a tough test against top-seeded and No. 3-ranked West Texas A&M at 5 p.m. at Schaeffer Park for a post-season edition of the Rivalry on the Range.

The Scenario
  • If LCU defeats West Texas A&M, LCU will in Saturday's 2 p.m. Championship Game against the winner of the matchup featuring No.2-seeded UT Tyler and No.3-seeded Angelo State.
  • A loss to the Lady Buffs would eliminate LCU from the tournament and place their NCAA Division II South Central Regional sights towards an at-large bid during Monday's NCAA Selection Show (9 a.m.).
 
LCU and OC Series Snapshot
  • Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M have met 37 times, with their first matchup played on March 11, 2008, with WTAMU holding a 25–12 advantage in the all-time series.
  • The Lady Chaps won the inaugural meeting in dominant fashion, 11–0, but have gone just 3–9 over the last 12 meetings.
  • LCU is 8–12 against WTAMU at home and 4–13 in Canyon.
  • Since joining the Lone Star Conference, LCU is 3–11 against WTAMU in league play.
  • The longest win streak for LCU in the series is five games (2008–2011), while WTAMU's longest stretch of dominance was six straight wins from 2019 to 2022.
  • WTAMU has a 3-1 record against the Lady Chaps this season, including a two-game sweep in Canyon earlier this season on March 23, winning by scores of 2–0 and 4–2. The two teams played last weekend in Lubbock, with LCU winning the opener 4-1 before a six-hour weather delay in the second game was won by the Lady Buffs 6-4.
  • The two teams have never played in May, as their meeting Friday marks the first-ever postseason meeting between the two geographic rivals.
  • The series has featured a number of tight contests, including four one-run games since 2022.
  • Here are some notes on this season's series between the two teams:
o West Texas A&M took three out of four games in the 2025 season series, winning both ends of a doubleheader in Canyon on March 23 before splitting in Lubbock on April 26.
o LCU stunned No. 1 WT in the opener of the April 26 twin bill, 4–1, snapping the Lady Buffs' 28-game win streak and handing them their first LSC West loss of the season.
o Kristen Boyd delivered a go-ahead three-run homer in that game, while Teoni Lamb and Reese Farrar combined to hold WT to a single run on six hits.
o The Lady Buffs responded with a 6–4 win in the nightcap, which ended close to 1 a.m. following a six-hour lightning delay.
o Lamb is 1–1 with a 1.85 ERA across 11.1 innings, while Farrar has logged a save and a loss over 7.1 innings of 3.82 ERA ball.
o LCU hit .284 in the four-game series but was outslugged .470 to .284, as WT launched six home runs to LCU's one.
o Kristen Boyd leads LCU with a .400 average (4-for-10) and has slugged .800 thanks to a home run and a double.
o Kawehi Ili is batting .333 (3-for-9) with a double, triple, and two RBI, reaching base at a .538 clip.
o Riley Flores is hitting .300 (3-for-10) and notched the only other LCU extra-base hit with a double in Game 2 at WT.
o Sophia Reyes has gone 3-for-6 (.500) in her three starts behind the plate and threw out two would-be base stealers.

Lone Star Conference Championships Breakdown
  • This season is LCU's fifth tournament appearance in the LSC Championships (of five eligible seasons, as there was no tournament in 2020).
  • Prior to the LSC, LCU qualified for four Heartland Conference Championships, winning the tournament twice (2016, 2017) and compiling a 10-5 tournament record all-time.
  • LCU is 2-4 all-time in the LSC Championships (2-1 in Canyon).
  • LCU is hitting .278 all-time in LSC Championship play and they have a staff ERA of 5.74.
  • Former standout Skylar Herrera is LCU's all-time program hit leader in the LSC tournament with seven hits in 19 at-bats (.368).
  • Surprisingly, LCU has nine sacrifices in their six all-time games in the event, with two sac fly and seven sacrifice bunts.

    • LCU advances to the semifinals after an 11-3 win Thursday over No.20 and fourth-seeded Oklahoma Christian.
    • The Lady Chaps produced 11 runs Thursday, which is the most they have ever scored in a LSC Championship game.
    • LCU is 6-for-14 (.429) with runners in scoring position, as Kadin Vire is 3-for-4 in the scenario.
    • The Lady Chaps are 4-for-7 (.571) getting the leadoff batter aboard.
    • Kadin Vire and Kawehi Ili are each 3-for-4 at the late.
    • Kendra Levesque leads LCU with their lone home run of the tournament and with three RBI.
