ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (May 21, 2025) — A pair of first-time national quarterfinalists will collide Wednesday afternoon in Florida, as No. 4-seed Lubbock Christian University and No. 5-seed Grand Valley State meet for the first time in program history in the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis National Championships at Sanlando Park. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. CT, with live scoring linked on LCUChaps.com.
Lubbock Christian (24-2), ranked No. 5 nationally by the ITA, enters the Elite Eight riding a wave of momentum after a 4-0 sweep of Queens (N.Y.) on Tuesday — the Chaparrals' first-ever shutout victory in NCAA postseason play. The Chaps claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and three, then rolled through singles with straight-set victories from
Mattia Ghedin,
Marco Seccia and Lone Star Conference Player of the Year
Kelly Giese. Giese, ranked No. 9 nationally in singles, delivered his second straight match-clinching performance, while Ghedin collected his 20th singles win of the season.
LCU, competing in just its third season as a full NCAA Division II member, is 2-0 this season in the national tournament (2-2 all-time) and has now reached uncharted territory in its debut at the NCAA final site. The Chaparrals, Lone Star Conference tournament champions who posted a 19-match win streak earlier this season, boast four players with double-digit singles wins. Included in the mix is ITA No. 13-ranked
Pablo Segura, who is unbeaten in his last nine completed singles matches.
Grand Valley State (19-2), ranked No. 10 nationally, secured its spot in the quarterfinals with a 4-1 win over Columbus State in Tuesday's Sweet 16 (also dubbed First Round since it is the opening round of the final site). The Lakers dropped the doubles point but rallied behind strong singles play, claiming victories at the top four lines. No. 44-ranked Denys Zamaraiev sparked the comeback with a win at No. 1 singles, while Jorge Ruiz delivered the clincher at line four. The GLIAC champions have won 13 consecutive matches and are making their 15th NCAA appearance and fourth straight trip to the postseason.
GVSU features one of the nation's top doubles tandems in No. 32-ranked Lucas Gonzalez and Victor Lopes, who earned a win at the top line in Tuesday's match. The Lakers are 10-0 away from home this season and have not lost since a March 3 setback to Rollins College, just miles from the current championship site.
Wednesday's quarterfinal marks the first-ever meeting between the two rising programs. The winner will advance to Friday's national semifinal round, scheduled for 8 a.m. CT. Updates throughout the match will be posted on LCUChaps.com and via LCU social media channels.
