Lubbock Christian Hosts UT Permian Basin With NCAA Championships Final Site Berth on the Line

LUBBOCK, Texas (May 8, 2025) — The postseason spotlight will shine brightly on the Penny Gullo Tennis Center Friday as No. 5 Lubbock Christian University faces No. 46 UT Permian Basin in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Men's Tennis Championship. First serve is set for noon in Lubbock, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Championship final site at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The matchup marks a familiar Lone Star Conference rivalry rekindled in the postseason, as LCU (22-2) earned the region's top seed after winning its first-ever LSC Tournament title. The Chaparrals, making just their third NCAA appearance in program history, will host the regional for the first time in their three-year history after knocking off Midwestern State 4-3 in the LSC Championship behind a clutch clinch from Andres De Los Rios.

LCU comes in riding a wave of momentum, led by LSC Player of the Year and No. 9-ranked Kelly Giese, who went 8-0 in LSC dual singles and owns a 22-8 overall record this season. Giese has been a steady force at No. 1 singles, while also teaming with Jordan Georgiev to form the nation's No. 35-ranked doubles pair. Pablo Segura, the LSC Championships MVP and ITA No. 13 singles player, leads the Chaps with 28 singles wins and is currently on an eight-match win streak. The depth continues with Mattia Ghedin (No. 62), De Los Rios, Marco Seccia, and Blas Ruiz Romero—each with double-digit dual singles wins this season—making LCU one of the deepest lineups in the country.

UTPB (11-7), an at-large selection, returns to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and fourth time overall. The Falcons are led by senior standout Jonathan Vega, ranked No. 25 nationally in singles and part of the No. 30-ranked doubles tandem with Jonas Krahofer. The All-LSC First Teamer and Co-Sportsmanship Player of the Year has notched five wins against nationally ranked foes and brings postseason experience from UTPB's Sweet 16 run last year. Krahofer, Sergio Alejandro Gonzalez Ibanez, and Grzegorz Rudnicki all bring strong records into the regional, giving UTPB a battle-tested lineup capable of challenging top-tier teams.
The Chaparrals swept both meetings against the Falcons this season. On April 6 in Lubbock, LCU claimed a 6-1 win behind a gritty three-set victory by Giese over Vega and dominant doubles play. The teams met again in the LSC quarterfinals on May 2, with LCU edging UTPB 4-2 in a tightly contested match that featured multiple three-set battles.

History leans toward the hosts, with LCU holding a 3-1 all-time series lead, including a 2-0 mark in Lubbock. However, UTPB's veteran presence and postseason pedigree provide plenty of intrigue in a high-stakes elimination match.

Live scoring will be available for the NCAA South Central Region matchup, with links posted on LCUchaps.com and on LCU Athletics social media platforms, including @LCUchaps on X (formerly Twitter). The winner will represent the region as one of 16 teams at the NCAA Division II National Championships beginning May 20.
