LUBBOCK, Texas (May 9, 2025) – No. 5-ranked Lubbock Christian University men's tennis secured its first-ever NCAA Regional title and punched its ticket to the final site of the NCAA Division II Championships with a 4-1 win over No. 46 UT Permian Basin on Thursday afternoon at the Penny Gullo Tennis Center. The victory marks a historic moment for the third-year program, as the top-seeded Chaparrals improved to 23-2 and advance to the NCAA Round-of-16 in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
Despite the final scoreline, the dual opened with early adversity for LCU, as the visiting Falcons struck quickly in doubles. UTPB claimed the opening point with wins on courts three and one. At No. 3 doubles, Alejandro Gonzalez and Lucas Nitzschke raced past LCU's
Pablo Segura and
Andres De Los Rios, 6-1, setting the tone. Although LCU answered at No. 2 with a 6-4 win by
Mattia Ghedin and
Marco Seccia, the doubles point ultimately went to the Falcons when the No.30 duo of Jonas Krahofer and Jonathan Vega outlasted No.35
Kelly Giese and
Jordan Georgiev, 6-4, giving UTPB a 1-0 lead.
The deficit did not faze the Chaparrals, who turned the tide in singles with a dominant display of depth and firepower. Ghedin struck first at No. 3 singles, leveling the dual with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Grzegorz Rudnicki. Moments later, Segura continued his red-hot form, tallying his ninth straight singles victory with a commanding 6-3, 6-0 rout of Lucas Nakasto at line two. The win improved Segura to 29-5 overall and 21-2 in duals, including a 14-1 mark at the No. 2 position.
LCU took full control of the dual as
Blas Ruiz Romero, solid once again at the sixth spot, dispatched Nitzschke 6-3, 6-1 to push the Chaps ahead 3-1. Ruiz Romero improved to 9-3 on the season in the No. 6 slot. The clinching moment came on court one, where Giese, ranked No. 9 nationally, earned a statement win over No. 25 Jonathan Vega.
The third-year Chap displayed poise and precision in a 6-4, 6-4 victory, sealing the program's first postseason advancement to the NCAA Championship final site. Giese moved to 23-8 overall with the win and improved to 7-3 against nationally ranked foes.
The remaining matches on courts four and five were left unfinished, though both featured tight third sets. De Los Rios and Seccia were locked in battles with Gonzalez and Krahofer, respectively, showcasing LCU's fight across the board even beyond the clinch.
LCU, now 1-2 all-time in NCAA postseason play, makes history by becoming one of 16 teams heading to Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida, with national title aspirations. The single-elimination portion of the NCAA Championships begins May 20.
