SAN ANTONIO, Texas (October 27, 2026) – Lubbock Christian University closed its fall schedule with a statement Tuesday, capturing the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional Preview championship after holding off a loaded regional field at The Dominion Country Club.
The Chaparrals posted rounds of 288, 282 and 283 for a 54-hole total of 853 (-11), finishing two strokes ahead of UT Permian Basin and Midwestern State, which shared second at 855. The victory is the third tournament championship in program history and LCU's first since winning the Ranger Fall Invitational on Oct. 31, 2017, at Boiling Springs Golf Club in Woodward, Okla.
The title carried added significance because of both the field and the venue. The Dominion Country Club will host the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional in the spring, making this week's tournament a true preview of the postseason test awaiting programs from the two regions.
LCU entered the tournament unranked and finished ahead of nine nationally ranked programs: No. 6 Oklahoma Christian, No. 17 Midwestern State, No. 21 UT Permian Basin, No. 27 DBU, No. 34 UT Tyler, No. 39 Colorado Mesa, No. 40 St. Mary's, No. 42 Cameron and No. 50 Cal State San Marcos.
The Chaparrals' 853 is the fourth-lowest 54-hole team score in program history and their best since recording an 845 at the Ryan Palmer Invitational on Oct. 13 in Amarillo.
LCU positioned itself for the championship Monday by opening with a 288 before firing a second-round 282. The 282 tied for the seventh-lowest team round in program history and matched the second-lowest second-round score ever posted by the Chaparrals.
Tuesday, LCU did what it needed to do, closing with a 5-under 283 to secure the two-shot victory.
Freshman
Zack Armes provided the decisive charge in the final round, firing a career-low 6-under 66 in his first tournament as part of LCU's team scoring lineup. Armes started on No. 6 and quickly took advantage, playing his first four holes at 2-under before eventually turning in a 4-under 32 across holes 1-9. He added two more birdies on his closing side to finish with the 66.
The round is tied for the third-lowest individual score in program history and is the lowest by a Chaparral since
Leyton Hiebert fired a 63 in the final round of the Ryan Palmer Invitational two weeks earlier.
Armes finished tied for 13th individually at 213 (-3) after rounds of 71, 76 and 66. His performance represented a significant jump from his only previous tournament as a Chaparral, when he competed individually at The Hrnciar and tied for 52nd at 222 (+6). This week marked both his first appearance in LCU's scoring five and his first collegiate tournament contributing to a team score.
Hiebert led LCU on the final individual leaderboard, tying for 11th at 212 (-4). He opened with a 71 before carding a 4-under 68 in Monday's second round and closing with a 73.
The 68 marked Hiebert's fourth round of 70 or better this season, while his 212 was the second-best 54-hole tournament total of his collegiate career. His best remains the 204 he posted two weeks ago at the Ryan Palmer Invitational.
Hiebert was particularly strong on the par-4 holes throughout the event, finishing those holes at 3-under with a 3.90 scoring average, tied for fifth-best in the field.
Freshman
Kaden Frierson delivered another strong finish with a 3-under 69 Tuesday, matching the lowest round of his collegiate career. Frierson started his final round on No. 6 and played his opening nine holes in 2-under 34 before closing the remaining holes in 1-under fashion.
He finished tied for 29th at 217 (+1) following rounds of 76, 72 and 69. The 69 matched the career low he established at the Ryan Palmer Invitational, and Frierson now has four rounds of 70 or better during his freshman season.
Hunter Welch joined Frierson in a tie for 29th at 217 (+1). Welch opened the tournament with a 2-under 70, matching his best round as a Chaparral, before posting an even-par 72 and a closing 75. His opening 70 matched the score he posted in the first round of The Hrnciar earlier this fall.
Hudson Reagan rounded out LCU's scoring lineup with a 221 (+5), tying for 56th. Reagan opened with a 76 before firing a 2-under 70 in Monday's second round, his second round of 70 or better this season. He closed with a 75.
Competing individually,
Joe Bybee made his LCU debut and finished tied for 76th at 227 (+11). Bybee posted rounds of 75, 76 and 76 in his first tournament representing the Chaparrals.
LCU's consistency throughout the tournament was evident across the statistical categories. The Chaparrals finished with 176 pars, third-most in the field, and recorded 52 birdies. They ranked second in par-4 scoring at 4.01 (+1), tied for sixth on the par-3s at 3.15 (+9) and eighth on the par-5s at 4.83 (-10).
Perhaps most impressively, LCU recorded only 32 bogeys across the 54-hole event, the fewest in the 17-team field.
Behind the Chaparrals, UT Permian Basin and No. 17 Midwestern State tied for second at 855. Cal State San Marcos and Cal State Dominguez Hills shared fourth at 857, while Cal State East Bay and Westminster tied for sixth at 859.
Oklahoma Christian's Christian Yanovitch captured individual medalist honors at 13-under 203 after rounds of 65, 69 and 69. Cal State Dominguez Hills' Anthony Asta finished second at 204 (-12), while Midwestern State's Anniston McIlwain placed third at 207 (-9).
The championship provided a fitting conclusion to LCU's fall schedule. Over its final two tournaments, the Chaparrals recorded two of the four lowest 54-hole scores in program history, tied for third at the Ryan Palmer Invitational and followed that performance with a tournament victory against a field filled with potential NCAA regional opponents.
LCU's spring schedule has not yet been finalized.
