Looking at MSU
  • Midwestern State enters its Lone Star Conference opener at 2–6 overall, with six of its first eight games decided by four runs or fewer and a 2–4 mark in one-run contests. Two of the Mustangs' losses have come against ranked competition, falling 4–2 to No. 18 Rogers State University and 8–4 to No. 9 Augustana University, highlighting a schedule that has already tested MSU early in the season.
  • The Mustangs' pitching staff has been the strength of the early-season profile, carrying a 2.63 team ERA with 31 strikeouts against just 12 walks over 53.1 innings pitched, while holding opponents to a .294 batting average. MSU has received quality innings throughout the staff, positioning the Mustangs as one of the more efficient run-prevention units entering conference play.
  • Junior right-hander Kayleigh Bowers anchors the rotation, owning a 1.79 ERA across four complete games while allowing only seven runs in 27.1 innings with 13 strikeouts and four walks, though she is still seeking her first decision. Isabela Cornell and Kaylin Salazar are both 1–0 on the year, while Shyanne Florence has three starts and did not allow an earned run over six innings against Rogers State, striking out five without issuing a walk.
  • Freshman infielder Chipper Mayorga leads the offense, batting .385 with an .852 OPS, 10 hits and a team-high eight RBI. Paige Scanlin supplies the primary power threat with two home runs, including a walk-off three-run homer against Rockhurst, while Scanlin, Marisela Landa and Madison Stewart each have four RBI. Landa also owns three of MSU's six doubles on the season.
  • Midwestern State is in its first season under head coach Kae Lani Bryan, who arrives after building Fort Scott CC into a nationally-ranked NJCAA program and leading the Greyhounds to a school-record 40 wins and their first-ever NJCAA Division II World Series appearance in 2024. Bryan brings a reputation for aggressive offense, base-running pressure and player development, traits already evident in MSU's 13-for-16 success rate on stolen base attempts this season.
