GOODYEAR, Ariz. (September 14, 2026) – Sophomore Abby Archunde opened the 2026-27 season with the best round of her collegiate career Monday, firing a 2-under-par 70 to sit tied for second individually as Lubbock Christian University began play at the Shootout at Estrella at the Golf Club of Estrella.
 
Competing on the par-72, 5,901-yard layout, the Lady Chaparrals posted an opening-round 315 (+27) and sit 12th in the 16-team field entering Tuesday's final round.
 
Archunde provided the highlight of LCU's season-opening round, carding three birdies and 14 pars while playing the par-5 holes at 2-under. Her 4.50 scoring average on the course's four par-5s tied for second-best in the 87-player field.
 
The 70 marked the first under-par round of Archunde's collegiate career and established a new collegiate low. Her previous best was an even-par 72 in the second round of the Oklahoma Women's Intercollegiate on Sept. 16, 2025, while competing for UT Permian Basin. Archunde transferred to LCU prior to the spring portion of the 2025-26 season.
 
Her round leaves her tied for second with Cal State San Marcos' Ellaclair Leedom and UT Dallas' Anvesha Gulhane, two strokes behind individual leader Carmella Carlisi of Cal State San Marcos, who opened with a 4-under 68. Archunde also played LCU's 10 par-4 holes at even-par, tying for eighth in the field in par-4 scoring, while playing the four par-3 holes at even-par.
 
Nadalie Cannell supplied LCU's second counting score with a 77 (+5), placing her tied for 35th. Cannell recorded 14 pars, matching Archunde for the most by a Lady Chap and tying for seventh-most in the tournament. She played the par-4 holes at even-par and was just 1-over across the course's par-3 holes.
 
Hailey Hays followed with an 80 (+8) and sits tied for 60th after recording 10 pars and a birdie. Bailey Rainbolt completed LCU's team score with an 88 (+16), while Marin Hallam opened with a 93 (+21). Rainbolt and Hallam were competing in their first collegiate round with the Lady Chaps.
 
The Lady Chaps combined for 50 pars during the opening round, tying Western New Mexico for 10th in the field, while recording five birdies. Archunde accounted for three of those birdies, with Hays and Rainbolt adding one apiece.
 
Cal State San Marcos leads the team standings after posting a 2-under 286, four strokes clear of Cal State LA and UT Dallas, which are tied for second at 290 (+2). Point Loma sits fourth at 294 (+6), followed by Vanguard at 298 (+10).
 
Dominican is sixth at 302 (+14), Fort Lewis College is seventh at 304 (+16) and fellow Lone Star Conference member Angelo State is eighth at 305 (+17). Chico State follows at 307 (+19), with Western New Mexico and Cal State East Bay tied for 10th at 312 (+24), three strokes ahead of LCU.
 
The tournament marks LCU's second consecutive season opening at the Shootout at Estrella. The Lady Chaps produced one of the strongest season-opening performances in program history at the event a year ago, finishing fourth in the 14-team field with a 36-hole score of 597 (+21). LCU followed an opening-round 301 with a 296 in the final round.
 
Cannell led LCU in last season's event during her collegiate debut, tying for sixth individually with a 146 while recording nine birdies. Anaya Perales added a top-20 finish at 150, while Alejandra Escobar and Hays tied for 22nd at 151.
 
LCU returns to the Golf Club of Estrella Tuesday for the second and final round of the Shootout at Estrella. Archunde will enter the final 18 holes two strokes off the individual lead as the Lady Chaps look to move up the team leaderboard in their first tournament of the 2026-27 season.
