Â
Last meeting between LCU and DBULUBBOCK, Texas (January 5, 2015) – Five Chaps scored in double figures to lift Lubbock Christian to an 86-78 victory over Dallas Baptist on Monday night at the Rip Griffin Center to keep their conference record unblemished and sit tied atop the league standings.
A.J. Luckey once again led LCU (6-4, 3-0 Heartland) in the scoring column with 21 points, while
Isaac Cardona posted 14,
Marcus Arrington and
Matthew Alford each contributed a dozen, and
Ridrell Holman added 11. Arrington and Alford were each one stat short of their first career double-double with Arrington dishing out nine assists and Alford grabbing nine rebounds.
Although the Chaps connected on just five three-pointers, half of the amount produced by DBU (8-4, 2-2), a trio from deep within a two-minute span extended the Chap lead from six to 15 at the 10-minute mark of the second half. Leading 56-50,
Beau Durham began the barrage with a shot from the wing followed by another by Holman and capped off by
Marcos Schuster for a 65-50 LCU lead.
A hard take by Arrington drew a bucket and the free throw to keep the Chap advantage at 15 with just under four minutes to play, but the Patriots put together an 8-2 run to close the gap to 81-72 with two minutes remaining. DBU's full court defense then forced Luckey into a turnover, but the Patriots failed to convert on the offensive end, and a Holman basket extended the lead back to double-digits, pushing the Chaps to their third conference win in as many tries.
LCU struggled early on, hitting just one field goal within the first three minutes, allowing DBU to jump ahead 11-2. The Patriots led by as many as 11 midway through the first half before Alford scored on a baseline floater to tie the game at 31-all with 1:21 until the break. With seven seconds on the clock, Cardona corralled a defensive board and found a streaking Luckey who went end-to-end for a layup at the buzzer to cut the Patriot lead to one.
For DBU, Myles Johnson scored a game-high 26, and Amari Bryant had 11.

Chaps regain share of conference lead with 84-59 win over OPSULUBBOCK, Texas (January 29, 2015) – Lubbock Christian thrust back into the top spot in the Heartland Conference with a convincing 84-59 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State Thursday night at the Rip Griffin Center, aided by
Ridrell Holman's season-high 17 points and career-high nine rebounds.
The win again put LCU (11-7, 8-3 Heartland) in a three-way tie for first place in the league. St. Mary's picked up a win over Oklahoma Christian and St. Edward's fell to Rogers State, placing the trio of teams all at 8-3. Texas-Permian Basin, Rogers State and Arkansas-Fort Smith all sit just a game behind at 7-4, guaranteeing a competitive second half to the conference schedule.
Holman played well in his first starting role since December 3, coming one board short of a career double-double, while
A.J. Luckey's career-high nine assists, coupled with 16 points, were one shy of his first double-double.
Marcos Schuster compiled 13 points and
Isaac Cardona added a dozen, helping the Chaps achieve their largest margin of victory on the season at 25.
The first half was much more closely contested than the final outcome, with OPSU (3-16, 1-10) taking a 9-8 lead on a layup by John Lazenby five minutes into game. Matt Alford countered 10 seconds later to put the Chaps back on top for a lead that would remain throughout the remainder of the evening.
Beau Durham and Holman teamed up at the 5:46 mark of the first half with the Chaps clinging to a 23-21 advantage. Holman drained two three pointers within a 25-second span, while Durham scored off of his own miss, hit a pair of free throws and scored successively in the paint to compile his entire eight points on the evening to put LCU up 37-28 a minute before the half.
LCU scored its first points of the second half on a free throw by
Marcus Arrington to give the Chaps a 40-30 edge and a lead that would not again drop to single digits. The Aggies closed to within 57-44 on a Lazenby three-pointer, but Holman responded with a layup and Schuster netted a three to extend the lead to 18 with 8:26 to play.
Scout Teal made two free throws and
Jacob Dawson hit a jumper to put LCU up by 28, the largest margin of the game with under a minute to play.
For OPSU, Antonio Manns, Jr., scored a team-high 16 points, with 12 of those coming in the second half, and Lazenby finished with 14.
