Free Falling... 25-Game Conference Win Streak Snapped

Free-Throw Shooting Woes and Turnovers Lead to Low Offensive Night

WICHITA, Kan. (January 8, 2015) – The longest active conference win streak in NCAA Div. II came to an end Thursday night, as Lubbock Christian University had an all-around off night and Newman Universi-ty ended LCU's 25-game conference win streak with 20 points from DeKendra Ledoux to defeat the Lady Chaparrals 52-46 at Fugate Gymnasium.

The loss was LCU's first ever Heartland Conference loss and it marked their first conference loss since a Sooner Athletic Conference road loss at Rogers State on Feb. 14, 2013. It took a night of LCU misfor-tunes for the streak to end against a Jets squad that garnered their first conference win (1-4) of the sea-son.

LCU shot a miserable 29.4% (5/17) from the charity stripe, marking their lowest free-throw total (five) since making five on Jan. 29, 2009 (vs. John Brown). The 29.4% mark by the program which has ranked in the top ten nationally in the prior nine consecutive seasons (leading the nation on three occasions) is the lowest under head coach Steve Gomez, who is in his 12th season coaching the Lady Chaps. Also contributing to the anomalous performance was the team's 23 turnovers. The turnovers are the most committed by LCU since they committed 23 on Jan. 31, 2013 against Mid-America Christian University.

The Lady Chaps were held to 46 points for their lowest offensive outing since held to 44 points on Nov. 5, 2011 against Metro State University. The point total was the lowest for a conference road game for LCU since held to 40 points by Oklahoma City University on Jan. 2, 2010.

Despite the negative numbers, LCU had opportunities to walk away with the victory over NU. The game featured nine lead changes. LCU climbed from a 28-22 halftime deficit and led 38-36 with 8:49 remaining, but the Jets responded with an 8-3 run for a 47-41 lead with 2:27 left. Brianna Caldwell hit a pair of three-pointers during the run. She was 0-of-9 from long range prior to connecting on consecutive attempts. LCU was unable to rally, going 2-of-7 from the field over the final three minutes and committing a pair of turnovers.

Ledoux led all scorers with 20 points and was 7-of-18 from the field. Kesha Buckner joined her in the winning effort in double figures with 11 points. Allison Szabo was 5-of-8 from the field and led LCU with 11 points. Blair Taylor was LCU's only other offensive threat with 10 points. She had two of LCU's three three-pointers in the game, as LCU was 3-of-14 (21.4%) from the field. LCU was productive inside, out-scoring NU 30-18 in the paint and shooting 51.6% (16/31) inside the arc. Newman won despite shooting 33.9% (19/56) from the field. Haley Burton had a career-high 10 rebounds in the loss.

LCU fell to 8-5 overall and they are 2-1 in the Heartland Conference. Newman improved to 4-9 overall and ended a six-game losing streak. LCU will seek to rebound Saturday in Oklahoma City facing Oklahoma Christian at 1 p.m. from Eagles' Nest.
