OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE STATE (6-3, 1-1 Heartland) at LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (7-3, 1-1 Heartland)

Thursday, December 31 at 5:30 p.m.

Lubbock, Texas (Rip Griffin Center)

All-time Series: LCU leads 25-22
History between Lubbock Christian and Oklahoma Panhandle State
LCU holds a 25-22 all-time edge over the Aggies dating to the inagural game in 1974 in which the Chaps earned an 84-65 victory. LCU has taken all three matchups since joining the Heartland Conference and has won nine of the last 10.
Last meeting amongst the teams
Lubbock, Texas (January 29, 2015) – Lubbock Christian thrust back into the top spot in the Heartland Conference with a convincing 84-59 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State Thursday night at the Rip Griffin Center, aided by Ridrell Holman's season-high 17 points and career-high nine rebounds.
The win again put LCU (11-7, 8-3 Heartland) in a three-way tie for first place in the league. St. Mary's picked up a win over Oklahoma Christian and St. Edward's fell to Rogers State, placing the trio of teams all at 8-3. Texas-Permian Basin, Rogers State and Arkansas-Fort Smith all sit just a game behind at 7-4, guaranteeing a competitive second half to the conference schedule.
Holman played well in his first starting role since December 3, coming one board short of a career double-double, while A.J. Luckey's career-high nine assists, coupled with 16 points, were one shy of his first double-double. Marcos Schuster compiled 13 points and Isaac Cardona added a dozen, helping the Chaps achieve their largest margin of victory on the season at 25.
The first half was much more closely contested than the final outcome, with OPSU (3-16, 1-10) taking a 9-8 lead on a layup by John Lazenby five minutes into game. Matt Alford countered 10 seconds later to put the Chaps back on top for a lead that would remain throughout the remainder of the evening.
Beau Durham and Holman teamed up at the 5:46 mark of the first half with the Chaps clinging to a 23-21 advantage. Holman drained two three pointers within a 25-second span, while Durham scored off of his own miss, hit a pair of free throws and scored successively in the paint to compile his entire eight points on the evening to put LCU up 37-28 a minute before the half.
LCU scored its first points of the second half on a free throw by Marcus Arrington to give the Chaps a 40-30 edge and a lead that would not again drop to single digits. The Aggies closed to within 57-44 on a Lazenby three-pointer, but Holman responded with a layup and Schuster netted a three to extend the lead to 18 with 8:26 to play. Scout Teal made two free throws and Jacob Dawson hit a jumper to put LCU up by 28, the largest margin of the game with under a minute to play.
For OPSU, Antonio Manns, Jr., scored a team-high 16 points, with 12 of those coming in the second half, and Lazenby finished with 14.
Chaps nearly shaken by Rattlers, hold on for first conference win
San Antonio (December 19, 2015) – Lubbock Christian University overcame a sluggish start to the second half to hang on for their first Heartland win of the season in a 70-62 defeat of St. Mary's Saturday afternoon inside Bill Greehey Arena, as Tyler Rogers produced a game and season-high 19 points and Marcos Schuster set his season-best with 17 to send the Chaps into Christmas break with a mark in the win column.
Both teams provided a strong showing from the free throw line despite St. Mary's entering the contest with the lowest average in the conference at 55-percent, and the Chaps missing seven freebies in Thursday's loss at Texas A&M International. The Rattlers connected on 21-of-25 while LCU missed just one of their 19 attempts, which included a perfect 11-of-11 by Rogers.
LCU (7-3, 1-1 Heartland) entered halftime with a 35-24 advantage and kept a nine-point lead on a jumper by Rogers at the 13:28 mark but squandered it away during the next five minutes as the Rattlers (5-5, 1-1 Heartland) knotted the score at 46-all. Four free throws by Rogers and scores in the paint by Marcus Arrington and Schuster put the Chaps in front at 54-48, but St. Mary's Bryce Smith hit a three-pointer to cut the lead in half with under five minutes to play.
Another three by the Rattlers cut the deficit to within two before a field goal by Ridrell Holman and two more free throws by Rogers put the Chaps up 60-54 with 2:43 remaining. A shot by St. Mary's Isaiah Parros was equalized seconds later by Rogers, and four straight Chap free throws opened the game up at 66-56 in favor of LCU.
St. Mary's struggled offensively early on, going scoreless from the 18:29 mark until Kriston Minor hit a free throw at 11:44 with the Chaps leading 10-3. The Rattlers went another minute before hitting their second field goal and waited nearly eight minutes to score one again. During St. Mary's drought, LCU led by as many as 15 before closing to within 29-22 with under two minutes until the half.
A.J. Luckey scored 14 for the Chaps and Matt Alford grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in just 14 minutes of play.
LCU limited Minor, St. Mary's leading scorer, to 10 points below his average of 16. Parros had 15 for the Rattlers, Yanni Wetzell added 14 and Smith tallied 12.
