Matthew Alford tallied a career-best 22 points Thursday evening inside the Rip Griffin Center.
The Chaparrals' 31 helpers count as the highest total since the 2010-11 season as the cause was fronted by
A.J. Luckey's nine which tied his career-high. The 38 field goals were a team season-high, contributing to an impressive 57-percent showing from the field. In addition to Alford's career night,
Marcos Schuster tied his season-high with 17, Luckey recorded 13 and
Isaac Cardona added 10.
LCU (8-3, 2-1 Heartland) never trailed throughout the 40 minutes beginning with a three-point play by Schuster 18 seconds in, followed by a score in the paint for a quick 5-0 Chap lead. The Aggies (6-4, 0-3 Heartland) knocked down a trio of three-pointers in a two-minute span to close within 10-9 at the 16:42 mark before a Schuster three and two free throws by Alford extended the gap to 15-9.
A three-pointer by OPSU's leading scorer, Antonio Manns, Jr., again cut the lead to one, but the Schuster and Alford duo combined for seven points in under a minute to give the Chaps a 22-14 lead. Two turnaround jumpers in the paint by Cardona gave LCU a 15-point advantage midway through the first half, but the Aggies hung around with five minutes remaining before the half to trail 35-23. The Chaps held a 16-point lead at four seconds when
Lucas Schuster drilled a three from the top of the key to send LCU into the locker room up 46-27.
A lob from
Marcos Schuster to
Tyler Rogers five minutes into the second half resulted in a big slam that ignited the bench and the crowd as well as putting the Chaps up 60-35. The dunk by Rogers was the start of a 9-0 run that increased the margin to 34 points, which extended to 41 on a bank shot by
Brennen Fowler and eventually grew to 43 on a bucket by
Scout Teal with two minutes left to lead LCU to the year-ending victory.
The Chaps travel to Dallas Baptist for a 7 p.m. contest on Monday.
