All-time Series: ASU leads 18-5
Homestand finale
The matchup with Angelo State completes LCU's five game homestand as the Chaps have pieced together a 4-0 mark inside The Rip dating to November 21. After beginning the season 1-1 at the RMAC/Heartland Challenge in Colorado, LCU has won five straight, their longest run since the 2013-14 season.
About Angelo State
The Rams are currently ranked fifth in the D2SIDA poll and are sixth in the NBCA rankings. ASU carries an unblemished record into Lubbock, not including a 76-75 exhibition loss to University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley Sunday. Angelo is defeating opponents by an average of 23.5 points per game and reached the century mark four times on the season, including a 116-point outing against Arlington Baptist on November 17. The closest regular season game for Angelo was a 79-78 victory over Heartland Conference member St. Edward's November 21.
History between the squads
The Rams hold an 18-5 all-time series lead over the Chaps, but LCU owned the latest contest with an 83-71 victory at home during the 2012-13 season.
Last meetings amongst the teams
Jevvon Hunter notched a career-high 19 points and led a foursome of Chaparrals in double-figures to lead Lubbock Christian University to an 83-71 win over Angelo State University December 17, 2012, inside the Rip Griffin Center. It was LCU's first win over Angelo State since December 7, 1985. Hunter was joined offensively by Jabril Durham (18 points), Anthony Brancato (17) and Jamaal Crayton (14).
Balanced scoring attack
Four Chaps average double figures in scoring, led by A.J. Luckey's 15.3 ppg followed by Isaac Cardona (12.5), Tyler Rogers (12.1) and Marcus Arrington (11.1). Luckey and Rogers have each led the squad in scoring three times, while Cardona has notched top honors twice and Ridrell Holman has done it once.
How the Chaps stack up
LCU leads the Heartland in field goal percentage defense (39.2), which equates to the 11th-best mark in the nation. The Chaps have also committed the fewest number of fouls in the league with 132. LCU's 18.6 assists per game is third best in the Heartland and is the ninth most in the country. A big reason for the high assist numbers can be attributed to Marcus Arrington. The point guard is second in the league in assists (41) which ranks 42nd in the country, and his 5.9 handouts per contest is third in the conference and 24th in the nation.
Chaps by the numbers
LCU is outscoring opponents by an average of 15.1 points while hitting 49.5 percent of their shots compared to 39.2 percent from their foes.
The Chaps reel in 6.9 more rebounds per game and dish out seven additional assists but commit 3.1 more turnovers per contest.
While LCU shoots nearly eight percent higher on three-pointers than opponents, their 111 overall attempts are second to last in the Heartland, as are their 129 attempts from the free throw line.
Cardona lends a hand
Forward Isaac Cardona began the 2015-16 season putting up impressive numbers, including his first career double-double (22 points, 15 rebounds) in a win at West Texas A&M on November 19. The Port Lavaca, Texas, native posted double figures in scoring during the first five games before suffering a hand injury prior to the contest versus Hillsdale Baptist. Cardona sat out versus HFWB and made a return on December 3 against WT in 17 minutes of action recording season lows with four points and a single rebound.
Chaps dash away from Buffaloes in second half
LUBBOCK, Texas (December 3, 2015) – A 23-7 run by Lubbock Christian University midway through the first half and a crucial 13-2 spurt over West Texas A&M with eight minutes remaining in the contest allowed the Chapparals to run to a 93-78 victory over the Buffs as Marcus Arrington scored a career-high for the second consecutive game and Marcos Schuster tallied a season-high 16.
The game was made up of contrasting halves as the Chaps (6-1) trailed 36-34 at the break with a trio of three-pointers while the Buffs (6-3) hit twice as many before going 0-for-12 from beyond the arc after the break while LCU hit 8-of-14 from deep and outscored WT 57-41 in the final 20 minutes.
LCU's ability to take care of the ball played a pivotal role as the Chaps tossed out 21 assists to 10 turnovers compared to a 9-to-6 ratio from the Buffs. The high scorers of the game shined at different moments, as WT's David Chavlovich went on a tear in the first half with 15 points and finished with six more after halftime. A.J. Luckey's 21 was highlighted by his 14 points after the break. Arrington upped his career-high by a deuce with his 18, Tyler Rogers added 15 and Ridrell Holman chipped in 10.
WT quickly gained control of the contest at 22-7 behind 11 points in six minutes from Chavlovich. An and-one by Arrington, a jumper by Schuster and a three-pointer by Luckey pulled LCU to within 10 at the 10-minute mark. Another 10 points, all unanswered, on a combined effort from Schuster, Alford, Cardona and Luckey, gained the first lead since the opening minute at 30-29 with 4:48 on the clock. Rogers gave the Chaps a 36-29 advantage with 1:32 to go before Chavlovich hit a jumper and banked in a three to close the score to a pair heading into halftime.
The Buffs regained their lead on a jumper by Ryan Quaid four minutes into the second half until a trey by Schuster and layup by Arrington put the Chaps up 53-49. A Luckey three-pointer fueled the 13-2 run to go up 18 that led to the 93-75 final.
