Chaps On The Road For the First Time in 2015

Chaps Opening Three-Game Series With Angelo State

The Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals play their first road game of the season Friday at 3 p.m. to begin a three-day three-game series against Angelo State University at Foster Foster.

LCU is 5-1 on the season after sweeping Adams State and taking two of three games from N.M. Highlands University. Each team are Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference members. LCU is averaging 12.3 runs per game this season. The Chaps are batting .402 as a team and seven players are batting .400 or better.  Gerardo Arzaga leads the Chaps with a .667 batting average. They are led in hits by Shane Crawford and Hunter McFall, who each have 12 hits. Crawford, the reigning Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week, leads the team with 11 runs, five doubles and co-leads in home runs with two. LCU has nine home runs through six games on the season. Brendan McCarthy and Wade Stramp co-lead the team with 10 RBI to summarize the balanced offensive production. LCU is currently ranked No.3 in the South Central region by d2baseballnews.com.

The Chaps have allowed an average of 11 runs a game, but they allow an average of 3.8 unearned runs a game. The staff ERA is 7.59 and the staff contains reigning Heartland Conference pitcher of the Week Glen Warrick. He is 2-0 with a save in three relief outings on the season.

Expected to start on the mound for the Chaps in Friday's contest is Brig Gerlich. He is 12-0 all-time and 1-0 on the season. He has a 7.27 ERA and leads LCU with 13 strikeouts in 8.2 innings pitched. Fifteen runs have come against Gerlich, but only seven have been earned. Gerlich is 0-0 all-time against ASU with one appearance. He went six innings on Feb. 15 last season at Hays Field and allowed seven runs off nine hits in six innings. Gerlich struck out six batters in the no-decision, as LCU rallied to win the game with a walk-off homer by Joel Lutz in extra innings.

ASU is 4-1 on the season and 3-0 at home after sweeping Texas A&M International in a three-game set. Like LCU, ASU has been offensive at the plate, scoring on a pace of 9.6 runs per game, but they are allowing five runs per game. The Rams are batting .423 on the season and defensively, they have only committed two errors on the season. Paxton DeLaGarza is leading the Rams with a .632 average and 12 hits. They have a staff ERA of 5.35 with 38 strikeouts in 37 innings. First Team Lone Star Conference selection Blake Bass is expected to get the game-one start on the hill. He is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA. He has held opponents to a .235 batting average in nine innings. He led the team last season with a 2.72 ERA and did not face LCU last season.

LCU won two of three games in the series at Hays Field last season. 2013 marked the last season the two teams played a series in San Angelo and LCU took two of three games. LCU has a 6-4 all-time series advantage and is 3-2 all-time in San Angelo. The series resumes Saturday at 2 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. Friday's game can be heard online and on am950/100.7fm.
