All-Time Series: LCU leads 52-18

Lubbock Christian University looks to keep their hot start ongoing, as they open a three-game series with New Mexico Highlands University Friday with a single game at 4 p.m. at Hays Field.

The Chaps are 3-0 after sweeping Adams State University last weekend at home. LCU hit .360 last week-end against the Grizzlies and out-scored them 31-24 in the series. The Chaps had a 15-8 edge on extra-base hits and have produced four home runs on the season. Hunter McFall and Jesse Pintado each had six hits in the series. Brendan McCathy has a .750 batting average on the season, as he is 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBI. He co-leads the team in RBI with Shane Crawford, who leads the team with two home runs.

The pitching staff for LCU has a 5.67 ERA and held Adams State to a .263 batting average. Brig Gerlich is expected to start for LCU. He is 11-0 all-time as a Chaps pitcher and this season he has a 7.38 ERA without a decision. Gerlich is 1-0 all-time against NMHU, as he went seven innings in an 18-8 win on Feb.9, 2014. He allowed two runs in the seven innings and struck out four batters (no walks).

NMHU won two of the three meetings last season in Las Vegas, N.M., with Gerlich's win the only win for LCU in the series. The series dates back to 1972 and last season's series marked the first meetings since the 2002 season. LCU leads the all-time series 52-18, and holds a 32-7 series advantage at home.

The series marks the season opener for NMHU. The Cowboys went 32-22 last season and 28-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They are a member of the RMAC's Plains Division and selected to win the division in the RMAC Preseason poll. Shannon Hunt serves as the head coach and his associate head coach is former Los Angeles Dodger Mike Marshall, the father of former Chap Mike Marshall.

Friday's game will air on AM950/100.7FM and the broadcast will also be carried on online (with video online). The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday.
