PLAINVIEW, Texas (March 24, 2015) – Lubbock Christian University claimed its second consecutive shutout win with a 11-0 run-rule victory over Wayland Baptist University Tuesday evening at Wilder Field for the Chaparrals fifth consecutive victory.
Coming off a 19-0 win Saturday over Dickinson State in Tucson, Ariz., LCU claimed their first road win of the season (1-7) with their first consecutive sequence of shutout wins since defeating Mid-America Christian 4-0 and 17-0 on Mar. 7, 2013.
The Chaps continued right where they left off from Saturday, scoring early and often against the Pioneers. A pair of first inning walks by Pioneers starting pitcher Craig Cook set up a RBI double by
Jesse Pintado and LCU had a 2-0 lead in the inning. Pintado had another RBI-double in the second inning, as
Nikko Velarde and
Brett Wilhelm led off the inning singling before
Shane Crawford opened the three-run second inning scoring with a double down the right field line. LCU added to the 5-0 lead with a RBI-single by Velarde in the third inning and a four-run fourth inning for a 10-0 lead. The Chaps produced four hits in the four-run fourth, with
Gerardo Arzaga and Velarde each producing doubles.
Jose Favela capped a two-RBI performance with a single in the inning as well. LCU's final run came in the sixth inning with
Ethan Kohnle hitting a single down the left field line and Arzaga scoring on an error by the left fielder.
In all, LCU tied a season high with six doubles (two by Pintado). The Chaps had 11 runs off 13 hits and only stranded four runners. Velarde led LCU with three hits (3-for-4) and was one of four Chaps (Pintado, Arzaga and Kohnle) with multi-hit performances. Velarde, Favela and Pintado each co-led LCU with two runs-batted-in.
Cook only lasted 2.1 innings for the Pioneers, allowing six runs off seven hits. He fell to 0-2 on the season.
Jay Rawlins made his first collegiate start and the freshman went four innings and did not allow a run off three hits.
Dalton Silva,
Mathew Lusk and
Glen Warrick each pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the combined shutout. Rawlins claimed the win and improved to 3-0 on the season.
LCU completed a span of 10 games over 11 days away from home going 5-5 (lost the first five and won the last five). They improved to 15-13 on the season, while the Pioneers fell to 20-12. The Chaps return home Friday and will face St. Edward's University for a Heartland Conference series beginning with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Hays Field.
