LUBBOCK, Texas (March 27, 2015) - Lubbock Christian University had their five-game win streak halted and had their recent offensive surge come to an end Friday, as No.23 St. Edward's University held LCU to seven hits in a 6-1 and 8-4 doubleheader sweep in Heartland Conference action at Hays Field.
LCU, who had out-scored their opponents 30-0 over the two prior games, was held to four hits in the opener and three hits in the second game, as Hilltoppers starting pitchers, Collin Sherrod and Bryce Davis, combined for a pair of complete game outings and held LCU to one earned run over 16 innings.
In the opener, LCU scored the game's first run with
Jose Favela producing his first RBI in conference play with a single to left field in the first inning. The lead would only last until the top of the second, as SEU's Wesley Harris produced a two-run base hit for a 2-1 SEU lead. The turning point came in the fourth inning, as AJ Hermanson hit a bases loaded triple as part of a four-run fourth inning for a 6-1 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, LCU would get their last hit of the game, as Sherrod retired the last 11 batters he faced. Sherrod improved to 5-1, as he allowed one run off four hits in seven innings and struck out four batters.
Brig Gerlich suffered the loss for LCU, as he allowed six runs off seven hits in five innings to fall to 4-4. Harris finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI for SEU, as his two hits matched teammates Gable Whitacre (2-for-3) and Kevin Mayo (2-for-3).
SEU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game with a pair of unearned runs in the third inning and a three-run fourth inning highlighted by a two-run single by Mayo. LCU would rally back with a four-run bottom half of the fourth inning. After being hitless through the first three innings, LCU produced three hits in the fourth inning, with
Ethan Kohnle taking advantage of a pair of SEU errors with a two-run single to cut the deficit to 5-4. The score went unchanged until the top of the eighth inning, as Mayo produced a sacrifice fly and Harris followed with a RBI base hit for a 7-4 lead. They grabbed an insurance run in the ninth inning with an unearned run for the 8-4 final.
J.D. Arrowood aided the Hilltoppers with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Mayo drove in three runs. Davis went all nine innings and allowed four unearned runs off three hits to improve to 5-1.
Guillaume Blanchette fell to 3-3 for LCU by allowing six runs (four earned) off eight hits in seven innings.
LCU fell to 3-6 in Heartland Conference play and they are 15-15 overall. SEU improved to 23-8 overall and 9-2 in conference. The Hilltoppers had only won once in the prior nine meetings before Friday's play. They will seek a series sweep, as the two teams close out the series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hays Field.
