Dallas Baptist at Chaps preview

DALLAS BAPTIST (14-4, 8-2 Heartland) at LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (13-6, 7-4 Heartland)
Saturday, January 30 at 2 p.m.
Lubbock, Texas (Rip Griffin Center)
All-time Series: DBU leads 25-15

History between the squads
Dallas Baptist holds a 25-15 edge over Lubbock Christian dating to the 1965-66 season. The Patriots won the first 11 meetings before LCU won its first in 1976. The teams took a hiatus from each other from 1990 until 2013 when the Chaps entered the Heartland Conference, where the DBU leads the series 3-2.

Last meetings amongst the teams
Dallas (January 4, 2015) – Lubbock Christian University was unable to contain the torrid shooting of Dallas Baptist as the Patriots tore apart the nets by hitting 15-of-28 from the three-point line in a 93-67 Chaparral loss Monday night at The Burg Center.
The defeat marks the worst Heartland Conference loss during head coach Todd Duncan's era, with only an 87-60 drubbing by non-conference opponent Tarleton State during the 2013-14 season professing a wider margin. A.J. Luckey was able to keep LCU afloat throughout the contest with his 8-of-16 showing from the field en route to 20 points while Tyler Rogers added 14 and Matthew Alford chipped in 10.

Tight race in the Heartland
This season the conference has changed the postseason tournament from a four-team tournament at the number-one seed to an eight-team neutral site format. Considering halfway through this season LCU's record of 7-4 would barley allow them to compete in the postseason had it been set up the same as last season, the switch is a welcome change.
As of January 30, Texas A&M International holds down the number one spot at 9-2 and Dallas Baptist sits in second with an 8-2 mark. Arkansas-Fort Smith and Rogers State, who is not eligible for postseason play, are in third at 8-3, followed by Lubbock Christian at 7-4.

Shared scoring of the Chaps
During LCU's 19 contests of 2015-16, seven Chaps have stepped up to lead the squad in scoring. Tyler Rogers has tallied top honors eight times, and A.J. Luckey is close behind with six; Marcus Arrington has on five occasions, while Isaac Cardona did thrice. Ridrell Holman, Matthew Alford and Marcos Schuster each have notched a team-high in points once.

Road woes for LCU
The Chaps have performed well inside the Rip Griffin Center this season by compiling a 8-1 record, with the only loss coming at the hands of then fifth-ranked Angelo State in overtime.
Contests outside of Lubbock have not treated LCU as well as the Chaps have gone 3-5, including 2-4 in Heartland play.
On the road, LCU averages 15 less points than at home, shoots six percent less from the field, takes an 11-percent hit from the three-point line and pulls down six less rebounds.

Rogers, Chaps hang on for win at OPSU
Goodwell, Okla. (January 28, 2016) – Lubbock Christian University outscored Oklahoma Panhandle State 13-6 over the final 5:38 as two free throws each by Marcos Schuster and Matthew Alford in the final seconds clinched a 67-61 victory for the Chaparrals while Tyler Rogers recorded a season-high 22 points inside Oscar Williams Field House Thursday night.
LCU (13-6, 7-4 Heartland) overcame a six-point halftime deficit and 21 points from Aggie Melvin Mitchell that included a 5-of-5 performance from beyond the arc to keep OPSU (8-11, 1-10 Heartland) from just their second conference win on the season.
Marcus Arrington put the Chaps up by three with 5:10 remaining to break a 54-54 game, and a three-point play by Rogers doubled LCU's advantage. OPSU's Antonio Manns, Jr. drilled two free throws, but Rogers answered again with a three to put the Chaps up 63-56 with 3:10 on the clock. Manns, Jr. then hit 3-of-4 from the line and a jumper for his sixth and seventh consecutive points to pull the Aggies to within a pair with 26 seconds remaining, but Schuster and Alford sank their freebies to seal the LCU win.
The Chaps started the game with a bucket from Alford along with three-pointers from Isaac Cardona and Schuster to open with an 8-2 advantage. A three by Mitchell cut the margin to 10-9 four minutes in before Schuster countered with one of his own. Cardona hit Ridrell Holman with a no-look pass for a 19-14 Chap lead and Rogers converted a wild and-one to increase the margin to eight midway through the half. Two shots by Manns, Jr. and a three by Marquavis Williams pushed the Aggies in front at 24-23 two minutes later before finishing the half on an 8-0 run for a 37-31 OPSU lead.
After the break, a free throw by Mitchell put the Aggies up eight three minutes in, but Brennen Fowler cut the deficit in half with two free throws and score in the paint. Rogers single handedly pieced together a 9-0 run before Schuster tied the contest at 50-50 and Cardona gave the Chaps the lead back with 8:16 to go. Cardona scored again for a 54-50 LCU lead in front of Williams hitting a jumper and Mitchell connecting on two free throws for a tie game at 54-54 with 5:38 left to play.
