Chaps unable to stifle blistering offense by DBU
Dallas (January 4, 2015) – Lubbock Christian University was unable to contain the torrid shooting of Dallas Baptist as the Patriots tore apart the nets by hitting 15-of-28 from the three-point line in a 93-67 Chaparral loss Monday night at The Burg Center.
The defeat marks the worst Heartland Conference loss during head coach Todd Duncan era, with only an 87-60 drubbing by non-conference opponent Tarleton State during the 2013-14 season professing a wider margin. A.J. Luckey was able to keep LCU afloat throughout the contest with his 8-of-16 showing from the field en route to 20 points while Tyler Rogers added 14 and Matthew Alford chipped in 10. DBU's Shannon Lilly let the hot shooting Patriots (8-4, 2-2 Heartland) by hitting 11-of-16 from the floor including 7-of-10 from beyond the arc on his way to a game-high 29 points while teammate Myles Johnson was successful on five of his seven shots and 4-of-5 from deep for 18 points.Â
The Chaps (8-4, 2-2 Heartland) found themselves in a hole from the start due in part to Lilly who hit his first four three-pointers as DBU built a 16-4 advantage five minutes into the contest and swelled to 24-6 following a Johnson three at the 11:51 mark of the first half. A layup by Patriot Patrick Burke pushed the margin to 42-22 with 5:30 left before the break until Luckey and Rogers compiled their own 14-4 run to slice the gap to 46-37. A timeout by DBU with under a minute remaining proved fruitful as Johnson drained a trey as time expired to again extend the lead to double digits.
Following the break, the Patriots came out firing once again as Jonathan Perry sank a three-pointer from the baseline before one each from Johnson and Lilly to give DBU a 57-37 edge in under two minutes. Rogers gained a bit of momentum by hitting a three while being fouled to give the Chaps a chance to put the margin under 20 points but another three by Perry sparked an 8-0 Patriot run.
After scoring 15 points in the first half, Luckey went quiet for the next 10 minutes until hitting a jumper as the Chaps trailed 74-50. The deficit swelled to 32 on two occasions on scores by Johnson with less than five minutes to play in which LCU was unable to stage a miraculous comeback.
