UPSET ALERT
Lubbock Christian picked up a huge upset over their South Central Regional rival, No. 16 West Texas A&M on Thursday night. Although WTAMU attempted to stage a late game comeback, the Chaps kept their composure and sunk some late free throws to keep the Buffs at bay 95-86. LCU is riding a two-game win streak with their victory over WT and will take on the Lobos of Sul Ross State University on Saturday Nov. 19. This will be the 73rd meeting between the squads in a series that dates back to 1970. LCU has won the last four contests against the Lobos.

LAST GAME RECAP
LUBBOCK, Texas (November 17, 2016) – Brennen Fowler's (17 points, 13 rebounds) double-double spearheaded a group of six Chaparrals in double figures offensively, and Lubbock Christian University was able to hold off a 28-9 run to defeat No.16 West Texas A&M 95-86 Thursday evening in an emotion-filled and whistle-filled contest inside Rip Griffin Center.

WT came out with the hot-hand as they streaked to an early 7-0 lead within the first three minutes, until a three-pointer by LCU's Ridrell Holman cut into the Buffs lead. Tyler Rogers initiated a 13-3 run for Lubbock Christian to provide the games first and only lead change. With 6:45 left in the half, the West Texas A&M bench picked up the first of what would eventually four technical fouls for WT. LCU freshman Ja'Qualyn Gilbreath converted his first two free throws of the evening to put the Chaparrals up 31-16. LCU increased their lead to a sizable 24 points before a three-pointer by WTAMU's Jordan Evans cut the Chaps lead to 45-24 at halftime.

Lubbock Christian held the Buff's offense to 10-32 (31.3%) field goal shooting and a meager 3-16 (18.8%) from behind the arc at the break. David Chavlovich, who averages 18.6 points per game for the Buffaloes, was held to a mere five points at halftime. LCU drained 19-30 (63.3%) from the field with a pair of three-pointers from Gilbreath and Holman. Gilbreath was the only Chap in double-figures at the break with 11 points. Lubbock Christian finished the half a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line, with Gilbreath knocking down four of them due to WT's two technical fouls. The Chap bench also outscored the WT bench 24-5 in the first half.

Fowler got things going in the second half for the Chaps as he scored a quick layup to put LCU up 47-24. At the 17:12 mark, Skylar O'Laughlin picked up WT's third technical foul of the game and sent LCU's Gilbreath back to the charity stripe to split a pair of free throws and increased the Chap lead to 53-29. With just over 12-minutes left in the game, West Texas A&M picked up their fourth and final technical foul. The Class-A technical was the third technical directed towards the WT coaching staff and it resulted in the ejection of Buffs assistant coach Chris Gove and head coach Tom Brown. Again, Gilbreath knocked down both free throws to give the Chaps even more energy. A jumper by Holman at the 11:15 mark put Lubbock Christian up 70-43 for their largest lead of the game at 27-points.

WT's Chavlovich finally had enough as he scored 20 points on his own in the final eight minutes. Chavlovich knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to cut the Chap lead to 13-points with 4:34 left in regulation. Lubbock Christian traded points with the Buffs until WT's Jordan Evans drained his final three-pointer of the night to cut the LCU lead to 87-78. Things got even closer for the Chaps as another Chavlovich three-pointer cut Lubbock Christian's lead to 87-84 with 1:35 left to play. WT, forcing 12 turnovers in the game's final 7:30 (LCU had 13 turnovers in the game prior to that stretch), forced the Chaps 25th turnover with 1:18 remaining, but Jordan Evans missed the equalizing bucket. Fowler scored six of LCU's final eight points to close out the huge 95-86 upset over the No. 16 Buffaloes.

In total, there were 53 fouls called throughout the game with Lubbock Christian on the receiving end of 27. The teams combined for eight free-throw attempts in the first half and 53 attempts in the second half. The Chaps shot 25-30 from the free throw line and just over 61% percent (32-52) from the field. The Chaparrals also scored 40 points in the paint compared to WT's 26. WT, who shot just 31.3% (10/32) from the field, had a 27-16 scoring advantage off a 25-16 turnover advantage. The 25 turnovers by LCU was the most since they committed 35 on Nov. 6, 2012 against Our Lady of the Lake (LCU won both games).

There were six different Lubbock Christian players scoring in double figures, with Fowler co-leading the squad with Tyler Rogers (17 points). Gilbreath (14 points), Holman (12 points), Jay Workman (11 points) and Marcus Arrington (10 points) joined Fowler and Rogers. LCU's Holman and Workman each netted a pair of three-pointers to help the Chaps shoot 6-12 from behind the arc. Chavlovich led all scorers with 26 points for the Buffs, who also received 16 points from Joseph Prince, 15 points from Jordan Evans and 10 points from Skyler O'Laughlin. WT fell to 5-1 on the season with the loss.

CHAP LEADERS
Lubbock Christian has finally been able to break through in the offensive category within the past two games. In their opening weekend, the Chaps were held to 78 and 74 points, respectively. However, in their last two contests, LCU has scored 90+ points. Sophomore Brennen Fowler is averaging a double-double so far with 17.3 points and 11 rebounds per game. Fowler is also shooting 58% from the field with a majority of his buckets coming from inside the paint.

Freshman Jay Workman has been a spark plug for the Chaparrals by averaging 12 points in his first four games. He has started in two games for LCU and is the only freshman to do so. Workman has shot 17-24 (70.8%) from the floor with six three-pointers.

Tyler Rogers has been a precision scorer as his past two games have had him shooting 7-9 and 6-9, respectively. Rogers has shown no mercy on the basket, as well, in his thunderous dunks that seem to ignite the Chaps overall play. Rogers is an 82% free throw shooter and has converted 14-17 shots from the charity stripe.

THE LOW DOWN ON THE LOBOS
- Sul Ross State University is a Division III program out of Alpine, Texas.
- The Lobos play in the American Southwest Conference. They finished the 2015-16 season on a loss to Hardin-Simmons University in the second round of the ASC Tournament.
- SRSU has one official game under their belt this season against Schreiner University. This contest against LCU will be the Lobos second in a three-game road trip.
- Sul Ross is the defending Western Division Champions of the American Southwest Conference after compiling a 16-10 overall record in addition to a 10-4 conference record in the 2015-16 season. The Lobos were preseason picked to finish second in the ASC West Division.
- Head coach Clif Carroll enters his second year at the helm of the Sul Ross State men's program. In his first season, Carroll completely turned around the SRSU program from a 5-20 overall record in the 2014-15 campaign. Carroll was also voted ASC West Division coach of the year last season.

SUCCESS AGAINST THE LOBOS
The Chaps own a 52-21 series edge over the Lobos in their long-standing series. In their past two meetings with the Lobos, LCU has blown them out of the water with double-digit victories. Sul Ross State's latest victory over Lubbock Christian was in the 2001-02 season.

PRIOR MEETING WITH SUL ROSS STATE UNIVERSITY
LUBBOCK, Texas (November 24, 2015) – A career-tying night for Ridrell Holman fueled a 78-56 Lubbock Christian University victory over Sul Ross State, as the junior matched his overall bests of 21 points, nine rebounds, five three-pointers and three steals Tuesday night inside the Rip Griffin Center.

Marcos Schuster delivered a season-best 11 points, while Isaac Cardona put up 10 and A.J. Luckey, Marcus Arrington and Brennen Fowler each added eight. The Chaps (4-1, 0-0 Heartland) connected on half of their shot attempts compared to 33-percent by the Lobos (0-3, 0-0 American Southwest), whereas LCU was 2-of-5 from the free throw line compared to a 17-for-20 showing by Sul Ross.

A three by Sul Ross's Alex Harrison gave the Lobos their first and only lead of the contest at 5-4 until a barrage of shots from deep by the Chaps, one by Marcus Arrington and a pair from Luckey, flipped the score to 17-5 in favor of LCU. Jacob Caloss of Sul Ross pulled the Lobos to within 19-16 with under 12 minutes to play in the half before Holman answered a minute later to double LCU's lead to 22-16.

Six of Fowler's points came in a minute-and-a-half span to put the Chaps up 32-21 at the 5:26 mark, and a trio of threes from Holman capped a 13-3 LCU run for a 41-24 lead two minutes preceding the intermission. Rocky Feliciano of the Lobos hit a layup and then sank two free throws with no time remaining for a 41-28 Chap advantage.

Former Chap Jacob Dawson opened the second stanza with a three from the right wing, but a 15-2 run that included consecutive treys from Arrington, Michael Grant and Schuster expanded the margin to 56-33. Three points by Scout Teal kept the Chap lead at 23 with 10:28 left on the clock. Five straight points by Holman and an and-one courtesy of Schuster gave LCU their largest lead of the night at 73-43 with under four minutes remaining to move the Chaps to the win.
