HOME HARDWOOD
Lubbock Christian University closes out their home-opening weekend in the final game of the Arbor Hotels Classic hosting Texas Permian Basin at 6 p.m. LCU is seeking to even out their current 1-2 record after gaining their first win of the season Friday night over Colorado School of Mines.
LOOKING BACK AT THEIR LAST CONTEST
Tess Bruffey made a welcoming return to the No.11 Lubbock Christian University roster Friday inside Rip Griffin Center, as she recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the Lady Chaparrals to a 63-48 win over Colorado School of Mines in the Lady Chaps home opener and on the opening day of the Arbor Hotels Classic.
With 9:28 remaining in the fourth quarter, the score was knotted up at 42-42. That was until Bobby Chitsey's put-back on an offensive rebound gave LCU a 44-42 and began a 12-2 run to give LCU a 54-44 lead with 3:48 remaining. LCU held the Orediggers without a field goal for a span of 6:35 in the quarter and outscored them 21-8 in the quarter.
The scoring surge to jump out to a double-figure lead is what LCU had been trying to seek in the prior three quarters. LCU had a trio of three-pointers in the opening quarter and led 15-10 halfway into the quarter. Heidi Hammond capped a 9-4 run to end the quarter for CSM and they tied the game at 19-19 to end the quarter. LCU let a four-point lead slip away in the second quarter, but did respond by ending the half on a 6-0 run for a 33-27 lead. CSM was able to hang around in the third quarter, out-rebounding LCU 19-7 in the quarter and putting up eight additional field goal attempts than the Lady Chaps.
LCU was 42.9% from the field (24/56), while CSM was 25.4% (17/67). Of CSM's 17 field goals, eight were from three-pointers. LCU struggled from three-point range, going 20% (4/20) in three-point attempts. They started out 3-of-4 from long range, but then made one three-pointer on 16 attempts. Of the four three-pointers for LCU, two were by
Delaney Gaddis, who finished with 10 points. Chitsey finished with 12 points and was 5-of-6 from the field.
Bruffey, who missed LCU's prior two games, registered her fourth career double-double of her career and the 11 rebounds matched a career high. She also produced four blocks. CSM's Laura Tyree was the Orediggers lone player in double figures with 10 points.
RING AND BANNER
Part of the opening weekend of home games for LCU includes the ring ceremony and banner reveal to commemorate the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship the Lady Chaps claimed. The festivities will take place Saturday prior to LCU's tip-off with Texas-Permian Basin (following the St. Mary's vs. Colorado School of Mines contest). All members from last season's squad will be present except Tony Iroko, who is currently playing at Mary Hardin Baylor.
OPEN HOUSE
With Friday's win over CSM, LCU is 13-1 all-time in home openers under
Steve Gomez. Their only home opening loss under Gomez was a 61-44 loss to Metro State on Nov. 5, 2011.
SASSY SOPHOMORES
Sophomore's
Bobbi Chitsey and
Olivia Robertson are each averaging 11.3 points a game and are LCU's leading scorers (of players playing in all three games this season…
Tess Bruffey has 19 points in one appearance). They combined for 24 of LCU's 33 points in the second half of Saturday's loss to CSU-Pueblo, and that is with Chitsey limited to nine minutes in the second half. Chitsey fouling out disrupted the Lady Chaps scoring rhythm. She had all five of her fouls called against her in a span of 7:15, with three called against her in a 56-second span late in the third quarter. Chitsey, who was 3-of-8 all of last season from three-point range, opened this season making her first four three-point field goal attempts. She is now 7-for-14 (50.0%) in her career from long distance. She posted 12 points Friday in LCU's win over CSM. Robertson has 34 points on the season, which is over half of her season total of 56 last season.

PRIOR MEETING VS.UTPB
Mar. 3, 2016 (Tulsa, Okla.): LCU 79 - UTPB 33
It was a game of milestones for top ranked and top seeded Lubbock Christian University in their first ever Heartland Conference postseason contest. The Lady Chaparrals received their 39th career double-double from
Nicole Hampton (13 points, 10 rebounds) and LCU opened play at the Heartland Conference Tournament with a 79-33 win over Texas-Permian Basin at John Q. Hammons Arena (UMAC). The win advances LCU from the Quarterfinals and places them into Saturday's Semifinals to face St. Mary's at noon.
Hampton hit a series of milestones early in the game, putting up her 1,000th career field goal attempt on her first shot of the game and also notching her 300th career steal on the first of five steals she recorded in the first half. She had six field goals in the game and her third moved her into fourth on LCU's career field goals list (moved past Carol Hise, who had 540 from 1990-94).
Kelsey Hoppel connected on a pair of three pointers and sits with 73 on the season, which ranks as the fourth best single-season mark in program history and is two away from having the single-season program record.
The Lady Chaps had trouble getting into gear to start the game, falling behind 2-0 and being kept off the scoreboard for the first two minutes of the game. Once they did get on the scoreboard (
Tess Bruffey layup), it was trouble for the Falcons. LCU went on an 11-0 run and led 11-2 with 5:54 remaining in the opening quarter. Six different Lady Chaps had at least a field goal in the opening quarter, including
Blair Taylor, whose layup at the horn put LCU up 20-8 heading into the second quarter.
LCU's defense was solid in the second quarter. UTPB was held off the scoreboard for the first 5:17 of the quarter, going 0-of-5 from the field and committing five turnovers. They finished the quarter 2-of-9 (22.2%) from the field. LCU did go a span of 3:33 without a field goal (0-for-6 during the stretch), but were only outscored 4-1 during the dry spell. Led by a 10-point first half from Hoppel, LCU outscored UTPB 18-6 in the second quarter for a 38-14 halftime lead.
The Lady Chaps held UTPB under 10 points again in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Hampton had nine of her 13 points in the third quarter. LCU used a 13-3 run in the quarter and outscored UTPB 24-8 for a 62-22 lead to head into the fourth quarter.
Haley Fowler led LCU with five points in the fourth quarter, and
Allison Szabo added four points to place both in double figures with 10 points. Niniva Taito scored all of UTPB's 11 points in the quarter and finished with a game-high 16 points.
LCU was 56.3% (27/48) from inside the arc in the game (49.3% overall from the field) and it led to a 52-6 scoring advantage in the paint for LCU. The Lady Chaps had a 20-10 advantage in turnovers and it led to a 24-4 advantage in points off turnovers. LCU produced 23 assists, with Hampton leading with six.
Kellyn Schneider had eight points, eight rebounds and a game high five blocks (LCU had nine as a team).
