History between Lubbock Christian and St. Edward'sLubbock Christian and St. Edward's first met on the hardwood over three decades ago. From 1985 to 1997, LCU held a slim 7-6 record over the Hilltoppers. The teams did not play each other again until the 2013-14 season where the teams split 1-1, as they did again the following season, and the Chaps took the first meeting this season between the squads.
Last meeting amongst the squadsLubbock, Texas (January 23, 2016) –
A.J. Luckey of Lubbock Christian University was the catalyst in a 77-65 win over St. Edward's with his first career double-double where the six-foot guard snared a career-best 16 rebounds and scored 17 points Saturday afternoon inside the Rip Griffin Center.
MBB reaps first rankingLubbock Christian University men's basketball received its first ranking since entering the realm of the NCAA in 2015-16 as the Chaparrals were slated in the sixth spot within the South Central regional ranks on Wednesday.
Today's release marks the first time the Chaps (17-7, 11-5 Heartland) have garnered recognition in the polls since their initial transition into the NCAA during the 2013-14 season.
The regional rankings consist of the top 10 teams in each of the eight respective regions: Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South Central, South, Southeast and West. Following the conclusion of conference tournaments in the upcoming weeks, the top eight teams in each region move on to regional tournaments.
The South Central Region is comprised of the Heartland, Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Conferences. Angelo State (Lone Star) currently owns the number one spot while Dallas Baptist (Heartland) and Fort Lewis (Rocky Mountain) round out the top three.
LCU has four regular season games remaining before the Heartland Conference tournament slated for March 4-6 in Tulsa, Okla.
Impactful performances by Fowler garner weekly honorAn impressive week by
Brennen Fowler of Lubbock Christian University men's basketball netted the forward Heartland Conference Player of the Week honors, as announced Monday by the league office.
Fowler led the Chaparrals into a three-way tie for second place within the conference standings in a pair of wins over Arkansas-Fort Smith and Rogers State last week. Due to an injury of a teammate, the true freshman was forced into the starting lineup and produced the best performances of his career by compiling back-to-back double doubles. The Smyer High School product grabbed game-highs in rebounds with 13 and 12 along with 14 points against UAFS and 20 versus RSU.
In an average of 29 minutes per contest, Fowler produced 17 points on 57-percent shooting from the field and 83- percent from the line while reeling in 12.5 boards and also recorded three overall blocks.
This is Fowler's first weekly career honor and the second for the Chaps as
A.J. Luckey wrapped up the award during week two of the 2015-16 season.
Tight race in the HeartlandThis season the conference has changed the postseason tournament from a four-team tournament at the number-one seed to an eight-team neutral site format. Considering only three games separate the top team from the current fifth place squad, the switch is a welcome change.
As of February 17, Dallas Baptist holds down the number one spot at 13-3 while Arkansas-Fort Smith, LCU and Rogers State, who is not eligible for postseason play, are in second at 11-5. Texas A&M International is next at 10-6 followed by St. Edward's at 9-7.
Shared scoring of the ChapsDuring LCU's 23 contests of 2015-16, seven Chaps have stepped up to lead the squad in scoring.
A.J. Luckey has tallied top honors eight times, while
Tyler Rogers is close behind at seven.
Marcus Arrington has on five occasions, while
Isaac Cardona and
Marcos Schuster have each carried the team in three games.
Ridrell Holman and
Matthew Alford each have notched a team-high in points once.
Road woes for LCUThe Chaps have performed well inside the Rip Griffin Center this season by compiling a 12-1 record, with the only loss coming at the hands of then fifth-ranked Angelo State in overtime.
Contests outside of Lubbock have not treated LCU as well as the Chaps have gone 4-6, including 3-5 in Heartland play.
On the road, LCU averages seven less points than at home, shoots four percent less from the field, takes a five-percent hit from the three-point line and pulls down three less rebounds.
