Chaps at Newman preview

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (15-9, 9-4 Heartland) at NEWMAN (12-9, 5-8 Heartland)
Saturday, February 6 at 3 p.m.
Wichita, Kan. (Fugate Gymnasium)
All-time Series: LCU leads 3-1

History between Lubbock Christian and Newman
The series between Newman and Lubbock Christian began when the Chaps joined the Heartland Conference during the 2013-14 season. All three contests have been close with LCU owning a 3-1 lead.

Last meeting amongst the squads
Lubbock (January 7, 2015) – Tyler Rogers tied his season-high of 19 points and Scout Teal provided strong inside play to guide Lubbock Christian University to a hard-fought 73-66 win over Newman University Thursday night inside the Rip Griffin Center as the Chaps held the Jets to 23 points below their season scoring average.
LCU (9-4, 3-2 Heartland) benefitted from career-highs of eight points and seven rebounds by Teal in his 20 minutes of action off of the bench as the Chaps outrebounded the Jets (9-4, 2-3 Heartland) 44-to-29 and took advantage of 15 Newman turnovers by converting them into 20 points. Ridrell Holman offered 13 points and eight rebounds while A.J. Luckey added nine points and a six assists after being recognized as the seventh Chap to reach 1,000 career points and receiving his commemorative ball at midcourt prior to tip.

Tight race in the Heartland
This season the conference has changed the postseason tournament from a four-team tournament at the number-one seed to an eight-team neutral site format. Considering halfway through this season only two games separate the top team from the current fifth place squad, the switch is a welcome change.
As of February 5, Dallas Baptist holds down the number one spot at 9-3 and LCU, Arkansas-Fort Smith, Texas A&M International and Rogers State, who is not eligible for postseason play, are in second at 9-4.

Shared scoring of the Chaps
During LCU's 21 contests of 2015-16, seven Chaps have stepped up to lead the squad in scoring. Tyler Rogers has tallied top honors eight times, and A.J. Luckey is close behind with seven; Marcus Arrington has on five occasions, while Isaac Cardona did thrice. Marcos Schuster has carried the team twice, and Ridrell Holman and Matthew Alford each have notched a team-high in points once.

Road woes for LCU
The Chaps have performed well inside the Rip Griffin Center this season by compiling a 10-1 record, with the only loss coming at the hands of then fifth-ranked Angelo State in overtime.
Contests outside of Lubbock have not treated LCU as well as the Chaps have gone 4-5, including 3-4 in Heartland play.
On the road, LCU averages 15 less points than at home, shoots eight percent less from the field, takes a 10-percent hit from the three-point line and pulls down six less rebounds.
