Bird Brawl in San Antonio...Lady Chaps Face Lady Eagles in Conference Tournament

For the second straight year LCU will open the Heartland Conference Touranemnt against OC.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (May 4, 2017) – Lubbock Christian University softball opens postseason play facing three-seed Oklahoma Christian at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the second game of the Heartland Conference Tournament hosted by one-seed St. Mary's University in San Antonio. All games of the five-team double-elimination tournament are scheduled at Rattlers' Stadium on the campus of St. Mary's. The winner of the contest will advance to play Friday at noon, while the loser will play an elimination game later Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.

LAST GAME
LAREDO, Texas (April 29, 2017) – Katera Eltsosie pitched one-hit ball and hit a home run and Sydney Beuthienhomered twice to help Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals close out the regular season with a 6-0 shutout win over Texas A&M International Saturday in a Heartland Conference contest at Dustdevil Softball Field on the TAMIU campus.
 
Neither team could get a run on the scoreboard through the first four innings, as the two teams combined for six hits over the span (Lady Chaps (35-16) had five hits at that point and TAMIU (18-33) had one).
 
In the fifth inning, Sydney Beuthien hit a solo-home run to get LCU on the scoreboard. Addison Ard led off the sixth inning with a blast over the left field fence before the Lady Chaps poured it on in the seventh inning.Courtney Medina led off the seventh inning with a double, followed by a triple off the bat of Casey Ingram to score Medina. Beuthien followed with her second home run of the game; a two-run bomb followed by a home run over the center field fence by Eltsosie to complete the scoring.
 
Katera Eltsosie (18-5) started in the circle for the Lady Chaps and went six scoreless innings allowing one hit. She struck out six batters and faced one batter over the minimum to notch her 18th victory of the season. Monique Garcia came in to pitch the final inning keeping the shutout intact retiring the Dustdevils in order. Delainy Thompson (12-14) got the start for TAMIU, pitching six innings and giving up five runs on eleven hits over the span to suffer her 14th loss of 2017. Sara Caterson came in to pitch the final inning and gave up one run on one hit.

STARTERS
All but one of the regular day-to-day starters for the Lady Chaps are hitting over .300 for the season, with the lowest slugging percentage at .343. In conference play, three of the nine players are hitting over .400.

TOURNAMENT MEMORIES
This season marks LCU's second season eligible for Heartland Conference and NCAA postseason play and LCU is participating in their second Heartland Conference Tournament. LCU won the conference tournament last season, going 3-1 in San Antonio. They opened with wins over OC and Texas A&M International before colliding with St. Mary's, who they split with, winning the "if necessary" title game 9-1. They were led by Tournament MVP Morgan Colburn. Ashton Bell, Molly Davison, Katera Eltsosie and Kelsey Hoppel all claimed All-Tournament honors.

AGAINST OC
The Lady Eagles and the Lady Chaps competed against each other when both were in the Sooner Athletic Conference in the NAIA. They both moved into the NCAA Division II and have continued to be conference foes as members of the Heartland Conference. Lubbock Christian holds a 27-7 advantage in the all-time series. This is the second consecutive season LCU and OC have opened the conference tournament playing against each other.

PRIOR MEETING VS. OC
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (April 7, 2017) – The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals used 12 hits to lead them to an 11-1 run-ruled victory over the Lady Eagles of Oklahoma Christian at Tom Heath Field on the OC campus Saturday.
 
The Lady Chaps (24-14) jumped on top first scoring four runs in the top of the third inning with the first two runs coming off a throwing error by the Lady Eagle third baseman that allowed Sara Ralston and Averi Miller to come home. Two batters later Katera Eltsosie doubled to drive in Courtney Medina and Casey Ingram.
 
In the bottom of the third inning Oklahoma Christian (26-17) plated a run when Haley Squier singled to left field bringing Kaylie Upton in to make the score 4-1. LCU would get the run back in the top of the fourth inning as Medina hit a sacrifice fly to score Addison Ard.
 
In the top of the sixth the Lady Chaps faced three different pitchers scoring another six runs. With the bases loaded Miller hit a grand slam home run over the left field fence scoring Lindzi Clemmer, Ard, Ralston and herself before Eltsosie later doubled to plate two more runs with Sydney Beuthien and Medina coming home.  
 
Monique Garcia (8-6) started in the circle for LCU going five innings allowing only one run off five hits while striking out four to earn her eighth win of the season. Katlyn Holmes pitched the final inning facing the minimum. Madison Hagood (12-8) got the start for OC going 3.1 innings giving up only five run off seven hits to suffer her eighth loss of the year. Madison Nordyke went 2.1 innings in relief allowing four runs on three hits before giving way to Kayla Eichler who came in to get the final out giving up two runs on two hits.
