LUBBOCK, Texas (March 30, 2019) – Lubbock Christian University continued its offensive onslaught against Newman in game three of the series, scoring 10 unanswered runs to sweep the series on Saturday afternoon.
The Chaps moved to 23-8 with the win and remain undefeated in Heartland Conference play at 6-0. They have now won nine consecutive games, dating back to a 3/15 win over Texas A&M-International.
Scoring started in the second inning for both teams, as
James Hardberger drove in the first run of the day with a double to left field that scored
Will Clark, who had reached base via a bunt single. The bunt for a hit was the first of three on the day for LCU. They now have seven this season, led by
Chase Whetsel with four. Whetsel also came around to score in the second inning on a walk to
Andrew Pratt, and LCU built the lead up to 6-0 on RBI singles from
Andres Negron and Clark.
The early lead gave starting pitcher
Chandler Casey plenty of room to work with, but the senior hurler did not need it. Casey did now allow a hit for the first three and two thirds innings and only allowed two batters to reach base overall. He did not walk any Jets and struck out seven, moving to 5-3 on the year.
Two unearned runs were added in the fourth inning as Newman committed a pair of errors that allowed
Braden Hayward and
Hill Alexander to score. Alexander had a pair of hits in the game, giving him a team-leading 15 multi-hit games this year.
The final two runs of the game came in the sixth inning, as Alexander singled and stole second to start the inning.
Andrew Pratt then doubled down the left field line to score Alexander. Another error allowed Pratt to score, and Casey shut down the Jets in the seventh to secure the run-rule win.
