Chaps Fall in Canyon

LCU Gets Only Four Hits Against WT Ace Corbett

CANYON, Texas (March 4, 2019) – Lubbock Christian University (10-6) went back on the road for another tough matchup in the midweek, losing 9-1 to No. 8 West Texas A&M (17-3) on Tuesday.

The Buffs, coming off a three-game sweep of UT Permian Basin, saved their No. 1 starting pitcher for the matchup, and Joe Corbett played his part well. Corbett allowed the only Chap run of the day but gave up just four hits and one walk overall in seven innings on the mound. He struck out nine batters himself while the two WT relievers added in four for a total of 13 LCU Ks on the day.

Opposite of Corbett and starting on the mound for LCU was junior Logan McCrummen, who gave up just three hits but walked five batters and hit another three. The Chap defense also committed two errors, leading to the six runs McCrummen gave up in his 3.1 innings of work.

Lubbock Christian's lone run in the game came in the top of the fourth, which was the only inning that the Chaps were able to string together multiple hits. Braden Hayward led things off with a single, breaking up Corbett's no-hit bid. He advanced to second on a passed ball and then came around to score when Keaton Greenwalt hit a two-out single to right center. Andres Negron followed with another single that advanced Greenwalt to third. The Chaps rally was snuffed out when Corbett induced a ground ball from Ryan Rijo.

WT responded in the bottom of the fourth and broke the game open with another five runs to extend their lead. The first six runs were attributed to McCrummen, and his reliever, Reagan Lucia, was tagged with the seventh.

Freshman Cody Lancaster came in to replace Lucia, making just the third appearance of his career, forcing a lineout to close out the fourth. Lancaster then went through the fifth without a allowing a baserunner and got one out in the sixth as well, marking a new career high with 1.2 innings pitched for the Kingwood native.

Three more LCU pitchers got into the game, all making their first appearances of the season. Koi Carrillo closed out the sixth after Lancaster left the mound, Collin Frondorf pitched the eighth and Kameron Deterding pitched the eighth.

WT's win snapped a four-game LCU win streak against the Buffs dating back to the 2016 season. It was the first time the Chaps had lost to the Buffs since a 7-6 loss in 15 innings on April 12, 2016 in Canyon. The last time West Texas A&M was the winner in a nine-inning game against Lubbock Christian was April 14, 2015.

The Chaps will be back on the road again this weekend, taking on St. Edward's in a four-game series in Austin, before finally returning back to the friendly confines of Hays Field for four-game series against West Texas A&M on March 14-16.
