LCU Garnering Wins With Balance Attack Behind Marshall

Highlights

Lubbock Christian University has extended their win streak to five matches, as they defeated Pittsburg State and Black Hills State 3-1 in a pair of matches inside Rip Griffin Center. They completed the wins behind the play of Bradi Marshall, who combined for 91 assists Friday, with a rate of 11.4 per set. She had an array of help, as LCU had at least three players with 10 or more kills in the opener, and followed with three players with 14 or more kills in the second match. Hannah Thomas had a pair of 16-kill performances to lead LCU. They also had 31 combined kills on the afternoon from Ashley Vanfleet. Marshall extended a streak of consecutive games with a double-double to three after a pair of double-doubles Friday.

How It Happened

Pittsburg State Match

Set One:
The opening frame had its ups and downs, with Pitt State leading as much as 11-7 and LCU leading as much as 16-13 after a 7-0 LCU scoring surge, which included a pair of serving aces by Maddie DeGuire. Pitt State was able to battle back from a 19-16 deficit with three consecutive points to tie the set 19-19. They would eventually get into position to serve set-point on four occasions, with the fourth serve resulting in an LCU attack error for a 28-26 set win for the Gorillas. PSU was co-led in the set by Erika Ivkov, Morgan Henning and Meg Auten, as each had four kills in the set. Ashley Vanfleet led all players for LCU with five kills in the set.

Set Two:
The second set was a neck-and-neck battle, with neither team leading by more than two points until LCU (trailed 17-15) went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-17 advantage. It was part of a 9-2 run for LCU, who eventually claimed the set 25-21. Vanfleet had another strong set, with six kills in the set for LCU.

Set Three:
Hannah Thomas produced six kills for LCU, with three part of a 9-2 LCU run to open the set. LCU led as much as 17-6 and 23-11 in the set before having to dodge a late Gorillas rally. Pitt State went on an 8-1 run before an attack error allowed LCU to escape with a 25-19 set win. Erika Ivkov led PSU in the set with six kills.

Set Four:
LCU thought they had the game in hand with an 18-11 lead, but the Gorillas stormed back with a pair of kills each from Claire Sandvig and Moyra Zulaica Casillas aiding a 9-2 run to tie the match 20-20. Despite the score tied at 20-20, 22-22 and 23-23, LCU never trailed and received a kill from Hannah Thomas to clinch the match with a 25-23 set win. Morgan Schwarz led LCU with four kills in the set. Ivkov produced 10 digs in the set for PSU in the losing cause.

Inside the Numbers:
.124 – LCU won the match despite a .124 attack percentage, and their third of the season when producing an attack percentage under .200.
2-0 – LCU improved to 2-0 all-time against Pittsburg State. The meeting was the first time the two teams had met since a 3-0 LCU win in Dallas over the Gorillas on Sept. 17, 1999.
3 – Bradi Marshall had 45 assists in the match. She also added 15 digs to complete her 19th career double-double. She has three double-doubles this season and all three have come in consecutive games.
7 – LCU produced seven aces in the match, with Maddie DeGuire producing three aces in the match.
13.5 – Morgan Schwarz set a career high with 13.5 points, which included a career high mark in kills with 10.
17 – Ashley Vanfleet produced a season-high 17 kills to lead LCU. The 17 kills marks the fourth time in her LCU career she has had at least 17 kills in a match.
93 – Pitt State posted 93 digs, which is the most by an LCU opponent this season. Marissa Bates (22) and Erika Ivkov contributed 26 digs, with Ivkov completing a double-double with 15 kills.
 

Black Hills State Match

Set One:
Tied 4-4, BHSU used five kills during a 6-2 run to take a 10-6 lead. Hannah Thomas dialed up a pair of kills during a 5-1 run in response for LCU to tie the set 11-11. The score would end up tied nine more occasions during the set. LCU used a 3-0 run trailing 26-25 to win the set 28-26. Thomas was joined by teammates Avery Moore and Ashley Vanfleet, who each had four kills during the set for LCU, who combined for 16.

Set Two:
BHSU had success early, finding a 5-0 run to jump out to an 8-3 lead. They extended the lead, never letting the lead slip below a four-point margin, leading 20-16. They claimed the set 25-20 behind 4.0 blocks in the set. Madison Hoopman had four blocks to lead the Yellow Jackets in the set. Avery Moore contributed five kills in the set for LCU.  

Set Three:
The Yellow Jackets built another early lead in the third set, jumping out with a 6-2 advantage over the Lady Chaps. LCU responded this time, going on an 11-2 run for a 13-8 lead. Hailey Cournoyer, who had two blocks in the set, had a kill and solo block and Sloan Williams served seven consecutive times during the rally. They would also have an 8-1 run in the set en route to a 25-19 set win for LCU. Thomas led all players with five kills in the set.  
 
Set Four:
The shoe was on the other foot to start the fourth set, as LCU used a 5-0 run to jump out to a 6-1 lead. BHSU started to inch back, using a 5-1 run to cut LCU's lead to 12-10. LCU was unable to get BHSU off their hills until a 6-0 run, which pushed a 16-14 lead to 22-14. Back-back serving aces by Marshall sparked the run, as LCU won the set 25-18 to win the match. Thomas led LCU at the net with another five-kill set.

Inside the Numbers:
.448 – Avery Moore posted a season best 14 kills and did it on a career-best attack percentage rate of .448. Her prior high was .444 on Oct. 11, 2018 against Newman.
1 – The win was the Lady Chaps first over Black Hills State, as the two programs were meeting for the first time.
3 – Freshman Hailey Cournoyer had a nice contribution, leading LCU in the match with three blocks. She also contributed 6.5 points in the match.
16 – Hannah Thomas' 16 kills was one shy of her career-high.
108 – LCU's Jalee Sims is now up to 108 serve receptions this season and has yet to commit a reception error.
19 – Bradi Marshall recorded her 19th career double-double, as she finished with 46 assists and 11 digs. She led LCU last season with 16 double-doubles.
