LCU History: Taking a Look at October 15

Men's Cross Country Tops Four-Time Defending Champion Arkansas in 1994 Race

October 15 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from October 15. Pictured are members of the 1994 LCU men's cross country team, which topped four-time defending NCAA champion Arkansas at 57th Annual Cowboy Jamboree in 1994 on this date.
 
Men's Cross Country
  • Running in 1994, Lubbock Christian, paced by top-two finishes from Simeon Sawe and Julius Randich, topped four-time NCAA defending champion Arkansas at the 57th Annual Cowboy Jamboree. Running in a steady drizzle, Sawe completed the 10K course in 29 minutes, 58 seconds, with Randich just four seconds behind.

  • A second round score of 302 propelled Lubbock Christian into a tie for sixth place Tuesday at 2013 The Territory Classic, led by seventh place finisher Facundo Garcia and Jarred Jeter's ninth place tie. Garcia finished with a two-round score of 147, only four shots back of the tournament win.

Volleyball
  • Meeting for the second time in a four-day span in 1985, LCU defeated Sul Ross in five sets (3-2) inside the Fieldhouse. Debbie Denison (Hendricks) served 26 points to lead the Lady Chaps.
  • Amidst a seven-match win streak during the 1988 season, LCU won a second-straight match with a 3-1 win over McMurry inside LCU Fieldhouse. Stephanie Raley (Free) became the first Lady Chaps player to serve out for LCU on their opening serve, as she served 15 consecutive points in the second set.15561
  • LCU defeated Sul Ross 3-1 in 1990, inside LCU Fieldhouse, to clinch a berth to the NAIA District 8 Tournament. Michal Warren (Giboney) led the Lady Chaps in the match, posting a double-double (25 digs, 11 kills) and six blocks.
  • The first encounter against Wayland Baptist in 1991 resulted in a 3-0 win by the Lady Chaparrals. The District 8 match inside LCU Fieldhouse was paced by a 12-kill performance from Jody Hamrick.
  • In 1993, LCU stamped a win with a victory over Dallas Baptist in a NAIA District 8 match inside LCU Fieldhouse. Hamrick powered 18 kills to lead LCU in the win.
  • LCU picked up a pair of wins in 1994 in Wichita Falls, Texas, defeating Midwestern State (3-1) and LeTourneau (3-0) in a tri-match hosted by MSU.
  • Win 16 of a 1998 26-match win streak was a 3-0 victory over UT Permian Basin for the No.7 Lady Chaps inside LCU Fieldhouse. Mindy Ratliff (Jones) led the way for LCU with 17 kills and seven blocks.
  • No.11 LCU attended the 1999 Powerade Challenge in Austin, Texas (hosted by St. Edward's), claiming a 3-2 win on the opening day over St. Francis (Ill.). Kari Barrett (Bezner) set the program career record in assists in the match, reaching 3,399 (passing the mark previously held at the time by Debbie Hendricks at 3,303). Barrett (Bezner) had 113 in two matches on the day, with Mindy Ratliff (Jones) getting 37 and Julie Williams posting 33 against St. Francis, in a match that lasted two hours and 45 minutes.
  • Previously having a 23-game win streak during the 2002 season, they started an eight-match win streak with a win over Wayland Baptist (3-0) in Plainview, Texas.10_15_
  • LCU defeated Loyola (La.) 3-0 to open play at the 2004 Orange & Blue Classic in Houston, Texas (hosted by Houston Baptist). In a match LCU produced 155 digs, Hayley Whiteside (Geer) had 39 to lead LCU. Meagan Kamplain (Dover) (27 digs, 13 kills) and Mandy Polk (Moffitt) (42 assists, 16 digs) each had double-double outings.
  • The Lady Chaps final win of the 2005 Husky Classic (Houston Baptist hosted in Houston, Texas) was a five-set thriller won by LCU over Trinity (Texas). LCU won the fourth set 32-30 to force a decisive fifth set, which they won 15-10. Ashley Dyer led LCU with 16 kills and Kenee Carter (Dover) produced a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. LCU had 12 aces in the match.
  • A career-high 20 kills by Channing Stewart, a Christa Branson (Daniel) career-best 34 digs, and a double-double by Erin Fisher (Moore), consisting of a game-high 53 assists and 10 digs, helped thwart off a late attack by Midwestern State allowing Lubbock Christian to survive throughout a five-set 3-2 win at D. L. Ligon Coliseum in 2014.
  • In 2015, Emily Hanaway notched a career-high 18 kills and Maddie Johnson recorded her seventh double-double on the season, with 15 kills and 12 digs, as LCU came back from a first set loss to win in 3-1 over St. Mary's inside Rip Griffin Center.

  • A goal early in the second half proved to be the difference as Lubbock Christian took down Newman 1-0 in 2015. Jamie Boone did the scoring in the 48th minute with an assist from Kate O'Gara, while LCU's defense dominated the Jets, allowing just one shot on goal in the win.
