Lady Chaps Split Sunday's Stay in Oklahoma

LCU Suffers first Shutout Loss of the Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EDMOND, Okla.  (February 16, 2020) Lubbock Christian University produced eight runs in the final two innings, leading to a 9-1 win over Colorado State University – Pueblo, but LCU would end up falling 2-0 to Colo. Colorado State in the ensuing game to close their stay in Oklahoma. The result of the second game marked the first time LCU had been shutout this season.

Game 1 – LCU vs. CSU-P

LCU Highlights:
Turning Point:
Clarissa Martinez hit a three-run double to left-centerfield in the fifth inning spark a six-run fifth inning. The score was tied 1-1 entering the inning.

How it Happened:
  • Alexa Riggs scored the game's first run in the third inning, advancing home on an error.
  • CSU-P matched the run in the fourth inning and had momentum heading into the fifth inning, but that is when things went downhill for the ThunderWolves. LCU sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning. Clarissa Martinez helped LCU regain the lead with a three-run double on a bases-loaded extra-base hit for a 4-1 LCU advantage. Annika Schwartzenberg bases-loaded walk added a run, and it was followed by an error led to the remainder of the runs scoring in a six-run inning for a 7-1 lead.   
  • Wysocki smashed a home run in the sixth inning and the game ended with a groundout hit into by Alivia Villarreal, which allowed Herrera to score to activate the run rule.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Jordan Wehr went 5.0 innings and allowed one run off two hits and improved to 4-0 on the season.
  • LCU improved to 3-0 all-time against CSU-P (2-0 this season).
  • The teams combined to go 0-for-14 in two-out at-bats.
  • Wysocki's home run was her first of the season and second of the sophomore's LCU career.
  • Of CSU-P's 16 balls put into play resulting in an out, 13 were ground outs. Clarissa Martinez led LCU with four assists on the field.
  • CSU-P was 0-for-7 with runners on base.
  • Skylar Herrera had two stolen bases in the win for LCU.

LCU Highlights:
Turning Point:
Courtnie Heller's home run in the fourth inning was the difference.

How it Happened:
  • LCU was unable to get a runner to third base in the game. A pair of fielder's choice put-outs at third base, along with a caught-steal, prevented LCU from getting a runner aboard third.
  • Peyton Reisman struck out to leadoff the fourth inning, but reached on a passed ball (dropped third strike rule). She would then score on Heller's home run.
  • Braelyn Crenshaw went the distance for UCCS, allowing six hits in the complete-game shutout.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Franco fell to 6-2 in the circle. She went 6.0 innings and allowed one earned run (no walk issued).
  • The meeting was the fourth-ever all-time meeting and the first won by UCCS .
  • The Lady Chaps shutout loss was their first of the season. LCU fell twice last season in shutout losses.
  • Brooke Makemson's multi-hit game has her tied for second on the squad with four multi-hit games.

LCU completed their stay in the Edmond Regional Festival II and now return home to host Tarleton State Friday at PlainsCapital Park.
