LCU Closing Out Oklahoma Weekend Facing RMAC Squads

The Games Are LCU's Final Regular Season Games Against Non-LSC Related Teams

EDMOND, Okla. (February 16, 2020) – Lubbock Christian University plays their day of games at the Edmond Regional Festival II Sunday, and the games (10 a.m. against Colorado State – Pueblo and noon against Colo. Colorado Springs) are LCU's final games of the regular season scheduled against non-Lone Star Conference programs.

LCU and CSU-P Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over CSU-P 2-0.
  • The prior meeting was earlier this season in Lubbock (Feb. 9), with LCU winning 5-1.
  • The first meeting was in Canyon, Texas, as LCU walloped the ThunderWolves 16-8 on Feb. 12, 2016.

Festival Notes
  • LCU has five games scheduled at the Edmond Regional Festival II.
  • Friday's games were scheduled on the campus of Oklahoma Christian and Saturday began the completion of the weekend's games at Central Oklahoma (10-minute drive north to Edmond, Okla.).
  • The Lady Chaps cancelled out on attending the event last season due to extremely below-average temperatures.
  • LCU is 2-1 at the festival this season.
    • Athena Muniz is 7-for-10 (.700) with two doubles and a home run with four RBI. She has a slugging% of 1.200 and on-base% of .727.
    • LCU is hitting .330 as a team (Brooke Makemson and Savannah Wysocki each have five hits in the series behind Muniz's seven).
    • Four different Lady Chaps have a home run in the weekend set..
 
Opening Thoughts
  • LCU is off to an 11-1 start on the season. They opened the season 9-0, which marked their best start since a 23-0 start in 2012 (best start since going Division II). Their current 11-1 record is their best 12-game stretch to open the season since a 12-1 start in 2017.
  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 6-1 to on the season (co-leads the conference in wins) and has a 1.55 ERA (sixth in the LSC) over 40.2 innings pitched (fifth in the LSC). She has 36 strikeouts (fifth in the conference) and six walks on the season (first walk allowed this season came in the 24th inning of her innings pitched). Opened the week leading the nation in strikeouts-to-walk ratio (25.0).
  • LCU has 10 home runs on the season, tied for third in the LSC. Angela Donaldson and Skylar Herrera each have three on the season to lead the team (tied for fourth in the LSC).
  • Donaldson leads the team in RBI with 13, which is tied for eighth in the conference (seventh on a per game basis at 1.1). Nearly half (six) of her RBI have come with two-outs.
  • The statistic of "game-winning RBI" is not an official statistic (the RBI that gives a club the lead it never relinquishes), but through their 10-1 season start, five different Lady Chaps have a game-winning RBI. Skylar Herrera leads the team with three. Clarissa Martinez and Angela Donaldson each have two, while Savannah Wysocki and Athena Muniz each have won (two have been via errors, which players do not get credit for).
  • Athena Muniz leads LCU with a .480 average on the season (12-for-25), which is sixth in the conference. Her .800 slugging is fifth in the conference.
  • Savannah Wysocki is LCU's hits leader (14) and is batting .368 (14-for-38), with five doubles (tied for fourth in the LSC) and three triples (co-leads the LSC in triples).
  • Clarissa Martinez is right behind Wysocki with four doubles, which ranks tied for sixth in the LSC.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 11-1 this season and three of the wins have come against nationally ranked programs (all three away from home). They were one of 17 teams nationally without a loss entering this weekend's play.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .296 as a team, with 10 home run and 69 RBI in 12 games. LCU averages 6.7 runs a contest (fifth in the LSC).
  • LCU entered the week ranking 12th nationally in stolen bases per game (3.2) and fourth in total stolen bases (29). They head into Sunday's play with an average of 2.6 stolen bases per game. Skylar Herrera ranks tied for third in the conference with 13 stolen bases and Savannah Wysocki is tied for sixth in the LSC with 10 steals.

  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 10th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Saturday with a softball record of 409-123 (76.9%).
  • His 400th win was recorded Feb.1, as he became the 53rd active NCAA Division II softball head coach to reach 400 career wins and he is the only active coach to do it in less than 11 seasons.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Looking at CSU-P
  • The ThunderWolves are coming off a 14-30 season and they went 13-25 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).
  • CSU-P is 0-9 on the season (five of the losses happened in Lubbock, where they opened the season last week).
  • The T'Wolves are hitting .282 on the season and they have an 8.00 ERA. Sabrina Felix leads CSU-P hitting .522 with four doubles.
  • The GAC Preseason Polls have UCCS selected No.7 (out of 13).
 
Looking at UCCS
  • The Mountain Lions are coming off a 28-26 season and they went 23-16 in the RMAC.
  • They are 3-7 on the season and 1-3 on the weekend (defeated Oklahoma Christian). UCCS will is playing their first 19 games away from home.
  • Brianna Santos leads UCCS, hitting .424 with three doubles, two triples, a homer and 14 RBI. UCCS is hitting .297 as a team with an 8.59 ERA.
  • The RMAC Preseason Polls have UCCS selected No.6 (out of 13).
