Five LSC Teams Playing Nonconference Games in Lubbock This Weekend

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 21, 2020) – Lubbock Christian University returns home to host their second preconference tournament event, the LCU Invitational, which begins Saturday with four Lone Star Conference programs joining the Lady Chaparrals for a series of nonconference games over the weekend. Play gets underway Saturday with LCU hosting Texas – Permian Basin (11 a.m.) and Eastern New Mexico (5 p.m.) at PlainsCapital Park.

LCU and UTPB Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over UTPB, 25-0.
  • Last season, LCU went 2-0 against the Falcons, with a 5-2 win on Feb. 10 in Lubbock in their previous meeting.
  • Savannah Wysocki was 4-for-7 (.571) against UTPB last season, with a triple, home run and four RBI. Alivia Villarreal was 3-for-6 with three runs and three RBI.
  • LCU is 16-0 all-time in Lubbock against UTPB and the previous five meetings have been played in Lubbock.

  • LCU leads the all-time series over ENMU, 32-0.
  • The Lady Chaps went 4-0 against ENMU last season, with three of the games ending in five-inning finals.
  • Lindzi Clemmer led LCU against ENMU last season, hitting .636 (7-for-11). KK Lopez-Liu and Savannah Wysocki (.400) each had six hits in the season series. Morgan Dufour (3) and Lopez-Liu (2) combined for five of LCU's eight home runs in the four-game season series.

Opening Thoughts
  • LCU is off to a 12-2 start on the season. They opened the season 9-0, which marked their best start since a 23-0 start in 2012 (best start since going Division II).
  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 6-2 to on the season (co-leads the conference in wins) and has a 1.50 ERA (sixth in the LSC) over 46.2 innings pitched (fifth in the LSC). She has 40 strikeouts (fifth in the conference) and six walks on the season (first walk allowed this season came in the 24th inning of her innings pitched). Franco leads the LSC and ranks 27th nationally with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 6.67. She averages 0.9 walks per seven innings (second in LSC and 46th nationally) and has a WHIP of 0.86 (second in the LSC and 41st nationally).
  • LCU has 11 home runs on the season, tied for fourth in the LSC (tied for 15th nationally). Angela Donaldson and Skylar Herrera each have three on the season to lead the team (tied for fourth in the LSC and 24th nationally).
  • Donaldson leads the team in RBI with 13, which is tied for ninth in the conference. Nearly half (six) of her RBI have come with two-outs.
  • The statistic of "game-winning RBI" is not an official statistic (the RBI that gives a club the lead it never relinquishes), but through their 12-2 season start, five different Lady Chaps have a game-winning RBI. Skylar Herrera and Clarissa Martinez co-lead the team with three. Angela Donaldson has two, while Savannah Wysocki and Athena Muniz each have one (two have been via errors, which players do not get credit for).
  • Athena Muniz leads LCU with a .414 average on the season (12-for-29), which is 18th in the conference. Her .690 slugging is 15th in the conference.
  • Savannah Wysocki is LCU's hits leader (17) and is batting .370 (17-for-46), with five doubles (tied for fifth in the LSC alongside teammate Clarissa Martinez) and three triples (second the LSC in triples and tied for fourth national).
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 12-2 this season and three of the wins have come against nationally ranked programs (all three away from home). They are receiving votes in the NFCA Top-25 Poll.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .290 as a team, with 11 home run and 75 RBI in 14 games. LCU averages 6.4 runs a contest (fourth in the LSC).
  • LCU entered the weekend ranking 15th nationally in stolen bases per game (2.6) and ninth in total stolen bases (37). Skylar Herrera ranks second in the conference with 15 stolen bases (tied for third nationally) and Savannah Wysocki is tied for sixth in the LSC with 12 steals (tied for eighth nationally).
  • In the circle, LCU is third in the LSC in ERA (1.88), ranking 33rd nationally. The Lady Chaps are also 18th in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.55) and rank 12th in WHIP (0.95). LCU has three shutouts this season, which is tied for 11th nationally.
  • Defensively, LCU has turned six double plays, which ranks eighth nationally. Their .972 fielding percentage is 37th nationally and third in the LSC.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 10th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Saturday with a softball record of 410-124 (76.8%).
  • His 400th win was recorded Feb.1, as he became the 53rd active NCAA Division II softball head coach to reach 400 career wins and he is the only active coach to do it in less than 11 seasons.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Looking at UTPB
  • The Falcons are coming off a 10-39 season and they went 3-27 in the Lone Star Conference.
  • UTPB is 8-7 on the season and all have been neutral site games. They play their first 18 games away from home.
  • Like LCU, UTPB has three shutout wins on the season, tied for 11th nationally.
  • Marissa Salinas has eight starts in the circle, which ranks second in the LSC and is ninth nationally.
  • The LSC Preseason Polls have UTPB selected No.16 (out of 17).
 
Looking at ENMU
  • The Greyhounds are coming off a 12-30 season and they went 8-22 in the LSC.
  • They are 5-4 this season and they are coming off a 3-3 performance at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Ariz. They went 1-1 in Lubbock on Feb. 7, but canceled the remainder of their games on the weekend due to bus problems.
  • ENMU ranks 19th nationally in sacrifice flies, with five on the season. All five are from five different individuals.
  • Jokaira Paredes ranks third nationally in sacrifice bunts per game with 0.67 per game.
  • The LSC Preseason Polls have ENMU selected No.15 (out of 17).
