LUBBOCK, Texas (February 23, 2020) – Lubbock Christian University completes their four-game weekend in the LCU Invitational Sunday with games against No.24 Tarleton State (2 p.m.) and West Texas A&M (6 p.m.) at PlainsCapital Park.

LCU and TSU Series Snapshot
  • TSU leads the all-time series over LCU, 7-4.
  • The previous meetings came in the 2017 season, as LCU went 1-4 in a season set which included a neutral site contest and a pair of home-and-home doubleheaders. On April 18, 2017, the team split a doubleheader in Lubbock, with LCU winning the opener 4-0, and Tarleton following with a 2-1 win.
  • The two games on Apr. 18, 2017 are the only prior games of the series that have been played in Lubbock.
 
LCU and WTAMU Series Snapshot
  • WTAMU leads the all-time series over LCU, 13-9.
  • LCU is 6-6 all-time against WTAMU at PlainsCapital Park.
  • Last season, LCU and WTAMU split a pair of games in Lubbock and the final game was played in Canyon, Texas (Mar. 5, 2019), in a game LCU lost 18-9. The 18 runs allowed were a single-game record for the Lady Chaps.
    • LCU's Lindzi Clemmer was 10-for-12 (.833) against West Texas A&M last season.
    • K'leigh Arredondo led LCU with five runs-batted-in during the series.
    • Alyx Cordell led WT in the season series, as she was 6-for-10 (.600) against the Lady Chaps.
    • Ruby Salzman (two homers) and Shayne Starkey co-led WT with seven RBI against LCU in the series.
 
Invitational Notes
  • All five teams in attendance are Lone Star Conference programs.
  • All games will be played at PlainsCapital Park.
  • The Lady Chaps have four games scheduled on the weekend.
  • LCU went 2-0 Saturday with a 13-0 win over Texas-Permian Basin and a 10-2 win over Eastern New Mexico. Each game ended in five innings.
    • Clarissa Martinez (3-for-4) and Savannah Wysocki (3-for-5) each had three hits Saturday.
    • Martinez led LCU on the day with four RBI.
    • LCU had four home runs Saturday and all ere from four different players.
    • The Lady Chaps hit .409 Saturday (18-for-44), with a 1.40 ERA.
    • LCU registered 13 two-out RBI Saturday.
 
Opening Thoughts
  • LCU is off to a 14-2 start on the season. They opened the season 9-0, which marked their best start since a 23-0 start in 2012 (best start since going Division II).
  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 7-2 to on the season (tied for second in the conference in wins) and has a 1.38 ERA (fifth in the LSC) over 50.2 innings pitched (fifth in the LSC). She has 46 strikeouts (seventh in the conference) and six walks on the season (first walk allowed this season came in the 24th inning of her innings pitched). Franco entered the week leading the LSC and ranks 27th nationally with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 6.67. She entered the week averaging 0.9 walks per seven innings (second in LSC and 46th nationally) and a WHIP of 0.86 (second in the LSC and 41st nationally).
  • LCU has a LSC-leading 15 home runs on the season (tied for 15th nationally). Angela Donaldson and Skylar Herrera each have three on the season to lead the team (tied for seventh in the LSC and 24th nationally).
  • Donaldson leads the team in RBI with 17, which is tied for seventh in the conference. Over half (nine) of her RBI have come with two-outs.
  • The statistic of "game-winning RBI" is not an official statistic (the RBI that gives a club the lead it never relinquishes), but through their 14-2 season start, five different Lady Chaps have a game-winning RBI. Skylar Herrera and Clarissa Martinez co-lead the team with four. Angela Donaldson has two, while Savannah Wysocki and Athena Muniz each have one (two have been via errors, which players do not get credit for).
  • Athena Muniz leads LCU with a .452 average on the season (14-for-31), which is sixth in the conference (she was 18th Saturday). Her .710 slugging is 13th in the conference.
  • Savannah Wysocki is LCU's hits leader (20, tied eighth in the conference) and is batting .392 (20-for-51), with six doubles (tied for fourth in the LSC and leads team) and three triples (second the LSC in triples and tied for fourth national). She also has two home runs (had one last season) for a .745 slugging mark, which leads the team and is eighth in the conference.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 14-2 this season and three of the wins have come against nationally ranked programs (all three away from home). They are receiving votes in the NFCA Top-25 Poll.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .303 as a team, with 15 home run and 96 RBI in 16 games. LCU averages 7.0 runs a contest (fourth in the LSC).
  • LCU entered the weekend ranking 15th nationally in stolen bases per game (2.6) and ninth in total stolen bases (37). Skylar Herrera ranks third in the conference with 16 stolen bases and Savannah Wysocki is seventh in the LSC with 12 steals.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 10th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Sunday with a softball record of 412-124 (76.9%).
  • His 400th win was recorded Feb.1, as he became the 53rd active NCAA Division II softball head coach to reach 400 career wins and he is the only active coach to do it in less than 11 seasons.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Looking at TSU
  • The Texans (no longer go by TexAnns) are coming off a 40-15 season and they went 20-10 in the LSC. They were a South Central Region Championship qualifier, going 1-2 and falling to Cameron for their second and eliminating loss of the tournament.
  • They are 13-3 this season, with a 1-1 record in road games. They play 21 games this season prior to their home opener on Mar. 4.
  • Going 2-0 Saturday (7-5 win over ENMU and 3-2 win over WTAMU), TSU enters Sunday with a 338 batting average and a 2.62 ERA.
  • Destiny Crumpley ranks sixth in the LSC with a .780 slugging mark and is tied for seventh in RBI (17).
  • Six Texans enter Sunday hitting .350 or better, including team-leader Morgan Ling (.439)
  • The LSC Preseason Polls have TSU selected No.3 (out of 17).
 
Looking at WTAMU
  • The Lady Buffs are coming off a 32-15 season and they went 22-8 in the Lone Star Conference. They qualified to the South Central Region Tournament in Kingsville, Texas, where they went 1-2 and were eliminated by Oklahoma Christian.
  • WT is 8-7 on the season and all have been neutral site games. They play their first 17 games away from home. They went 1-1 in Lubbock Saturday, defeating UTPB 11-3 before falling to Tarleton 2-3. WTAMU plays Eastern New Mexico Sunday before facing LCU.
  • The Lady Buffs enter Sunday with a team batting average of .306 and an ERA of 3.32.
  • Alyx Cordell leads WT in RBI (15) and ranks eighth in the LSC with a .519 on-base percentage. She is hitting .415 to lead WT.
  • The LSC Preseason Polls have WT selected No.6 (out of 17).
