Third Time’s the Charm

LCU Hosts ASU in Third Try at Home-Opener

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (5-0, 5-0 LSC)
at ANGELO STATE (3-4, 3-4)
Saturday, January 16 – 4 PM
Rip Griffin Center (Lubbock, Texas)
All-Time Series: Angelo State leads 22-7

TIPOFF
After one day off, the Lubbock Christian University men's basketball team will be back on the hardwood for a rematch against Angelo State at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Rip Griffin Center. The Chaps dominated the Rams 87-69 on Thursday when the two teams met in San Angelo. It was LCU's first win in divisional play and kept them undefeated so far this season.

FIVE THINGS TO FOCUS ON

1 | The Chaparral's 5-0 start to the season is their best-ever under head coach Todd Duncan, who took over for the 2011-12 season. The last time LCU started with five straight wins was the 2010-11 season. If they win Saturday, however, it will be the program's best start to a season since 2000-01, when they began the year 9-0 on the way to a 21-10 record a Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title and a run to the Elite Eight in the NAIA National Tournament.

2 | LCU's field-goal percentage of .579 on Thursday was their highest so far this season. It was also the highest single-game mark for the Chaps since Jan. 23, 2020, when they shot 58.9 percent from the field in a win over St. Mary's. Overall this season, the Chaps have shot 51.6 percent, which is the second-best mark in the Lone Star Conference, behind only Dallas Baptist's 53.7 shooting percentage.

3 | Angelo State shoots the ball well, hitting 47.7 percent of their shots so far this season, which is the fifth-best mark in the LSC. They have struggled, however, shooting from behind the arc, where they have a season mark of just 29.9 percent, which is the fifth-worst mark in the LSC.

4 | Rowan Mackenzie led the Chaps in scoring with 21 points on Thursday, marking the second time he has scored at least 20 and the second time he has led the team in scoring. The Australia native was also just one rebound shy of a double-double, which would have been his third this year. Mackenzie is shooting 62.5 percent from the field this year, which is the fourth-best mark in the LSC. He is averaging 14.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

5 | Angelo State has done a good job this season of scoring in transition, but were held to just 10 fast-break points on Thursday because Lubbock Christian took care of the ball and had a season-low nine turnovers. The Chaps turn the ball over an average of 13 times per game, which is the fourth-fewest in the league.

THE SERIES WITH ANGELO STATE
Thursday night's win over the Rams was the first for the Chaps since Nov. 25, 2017, when they won 69-65 in San Angelo, and only the seventh in program history over ASU. Lubbock Christian has only beaten Angelo State in back-to-back meetings once, in 1982, when they won 66-58 and 75-62 in the same season.
