Lady Chaps Playing First True Road Games of Young 2021 Season

PENSACOLA, Fla. (January 30, 2021) – No.19 Lubbock Christian University closes out their trip to the Gulf South Saturday with a road doubleheader at West Florida. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m., as LCU aims to continue their solid start from Friday.

LCU and UWF Series Snapshot
  • LCU has never faced UWF.
  • The meeting marks LCU's second-ever game against a Florida based program. LCU's first meeting against a team from the Sunshine State came last season against Florida Tech in the season opener in Gulf Shores, Ala. (LCU won 5-4 in nine innings).
  • West Florida is a member of the Gulf South Conference and LCU is 6-0 all-time against GSC members.
 
Trip Takes
  • The Lady Chaps won both of their Friday games and are 1-0 on the season. The first game Friday was a 5-2 exhibition win over Mobile, and it was followed by a 5-0 win over Mississippi College.
  • Taylor Franco pitched her second career complete-game shutout Friday against MC, striking out 12 batters in the process. The mark was two off her career high.
  • Savannah Wysocki led LCU at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, a triple and a pair of stolen bases.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their seventh season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their second season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season.
 
Opening Day  
  • With LCU's win Friday over MC, LCU improved to 14-0 all-time in season openers.
  • The win was the seventh of LCU's season openers which has resulted in shutout wins.
  • On Feb. 13, 2008, LCU's season opener and inaugural game in program history resulted in a 15-0 no-hit victory over Southwest (N.M.).
  • This season marks the second consecutive season LCU is opening the season away from home. Prior to last season, the last time LCU opened the season away from home was their 2013 opener (10-0 win over Eastern New Mexico in San Antonio, Texas).
 
Last Season
  • LCU went 20-6 last season (COVID-shortened) and was tied for fifth in the Lone Star Conference with a 5-3 conference mark at the time the season ended.
  • LCU was 8-0 against nationally ranked programs.
  • The Lady Chaps went 5-2 in neutral site games last season.
 
Debut
  • Kamryn Gibbs (OF/ Slaton, Texas) was the only LCU newcomer to make her LCU debut in Friday's regular season tilt. Gibbs pinch ran for Athena Muniz and played right field in the seventh inning.
  
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is beginning his 11th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Saturday with a softball record of 419-128.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
National Notes
  • LCU opens the season ranked No.19 in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Poll
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs.
 
Looking at UWF
  • The Argonauts went 17-9 last season, and they were sitting tied for sixth in the GSC with a 7-5 conference mark at season's cancellation.
  • Saturday marks the season opener for UWF and they have won their last four season openers.
  • West Florida is picked fourth in the 13-team SSAC Preseason Poll. Grace Gilbert, Teala Howard, and Kelsey Sweatt were named Preseason All-Conference by GSC coaches.
  • Texas ties to UWF include third-year head coach Ashliegh McLean, who is from McKinney, Texas and Lexi Pope from Frisco, Texas. Pope and LCU's Brooke Makemson are both from Frisco (not the same high school) and both are Division I transfers from Louisiana Tech.
