No.1 Lubbock Christian University has a shot at history Sunday afternoon inside Rip Griffin Center, playing host to UT Permian Basin to complete a Lone Star Conference West Division series. A win by the Lady Chaps would allow the Lady Chaps to match the NCAA Division II women's basketball record for consecutive home, which is 87 consecutive home wins. The contest is also serving as Senior Day for the Lady Chaps, as during halftime of the men's basketball contest, LCU will recognize seniors involved in the program, including student-athletes
Ashton Duncan,
Emma Middleton,
Juliana Robertson,
Allie Schulte and
Madelyn Turner.
FIVE THINGS TO FOCUS ON
1 > LCU (12-0, 10-0-LSC, 4-0-Div.) aims to improve to 8-0 inside Rip Griffin Center on the season, where they are averaging a 32.9 scoring margin in their eight home games played.
Ashton Duncan leads LCU at home this season, averaging 13.8 points per game.
Allie Schulte (12.5) and
Emma Middleton (11.8) also averages double figures at home. LCU has a 42-9 advantage in blocks at home and they have held opponents to 32.7% shooting. The Lady Chaps are shooting 49.2% on the Rip Griffin Center floor this season, with a 40.5% shooting mark from outside. Duncan is shooting 60.4% from outside at home. She is 29-of-48 at home this season from outside.
2 > The Lady Chaps enter Sunday's play with their active home win streak sitting at 86 games, which ranks second all-time in NCAA Division II women's basketball (it actively leads all of NCAA). The record is 87 consecutive home victories by Nebraska-Kearney, who completed the task from Jan. 31, 1995 - Nov. 24, 2001. LCU's last home loss came on Jan. 1, 2015 against Oklahoma City University. LCU, who also has a 7-0 mark in NCAA postseason play in Lubbock in the mix, has also won 72 consecutive home conference games, with their last conference home loss occurring Jan. 10, 2013 (against Oklahoma City). They completed a 49-0 all-time mark in Heartland Conference home games (they are 17-0 in LSC home games).
3 >
Ashton Duncan is coming off a 25-point performance from Friday's 74-43 road win at UT Permian Basin in the series opener. Duncan, who was also joined in double figures by
Emma Middleton (13) and
Allie Schulte (11), was 9-of-12 from the field and 6-of-8 from three-point range. She was 5-of-6 in the opening half from outside and had 18 points in the half (had 11 in the opening quarter). She finished a point away from matching her career high. The outside shooting performance has her 40-of-79 (50.6%) on the season. She is 19-of-33 (57.6%) in her career against UTPB from long range (five games).
4 > UTPB's Alexis Popham carried the weight for UTPB Friday, posting 15 points for the Falcons lone double-figure producer. She posted 12 of her 15 points in the opening half and finished the game 3-of-3 from three-point range. The 15 points was a career high for junior, who has been limited to four games due to injury.
5 > LCU extended a streak of games with at least 10 steals Friday, as they produced 15 steals, with eight different Lady Chaps producing at least one swipe. The steals helped lead to a 21-6 scoring advantage in points-off-turnovers (LCU forced 23 turnovers, marking the seventh straight game LCU has forced at least 20 turnovers). PREVIOUS RECAP VS. UTPB
Feb. 19, 2021 (Odessa, Texas) - UTPB:43 - LCU:74
Ashton Duncan racked up 25 points, with 18 points in the first half, and finished with six three pointers to help lead No.1 LCU to a 74-43 road victory over UT Permian Basin in Lone Star Conference West Division play inside UTPB Gym.
Duncan was 6-of-8 from long range in the game, connecting on all three of her first quarter attempts. Her offensive opening quarter was much needed, as LCU and UTPB combined to miss their first nine attempts of the game. LCU missed their first five attempts and had to overcome a marginal deficit after UTPB scored five of their first seven points from the free-throw line. Duncan's first points of the game (2:18 into the game) put LCU on the scoreboard and ignited a 13-3 LCU run. Eleven (11) of the points in the run were from Duncan, who connected on three consecutive three-point attempts. The run helped LCU take a 16-11 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter featured Duncan and UTPB's Alexis Popham attempting to carry their team on their back. Duncan opened the quarter's scoring with a three-pointer, and Popham, as UTPB attempted six consecutive three-pointers, hit back-to-back three-pointers for the Falcons. Popham, who scored 10 of UTPB's 12 points in the quarter, was unable to get the deficit cut inside of seven points, as
Allie Schulte answered Popham's first three-pointer with a three-pointer before a 5-0 LCU run followed Popham's second trey. Duncan (6-of-8 from the field in the half) closed LCU's first half scoring with a three-pointer and LCU went into the half leading 37-23.
Popham, who was 3-of-3 from three-point range in the game, hit her third three-pointer in the third quarter to help keep UTPB within reach. The long-distance shot cut LCU's lead to 41-27 two minutes into the second half. Duncan answered with her only three-pointer of the second half and it began a 14-2 LCU run (seven of the points from Duncan) to put the Lady Chaps up 55-29 (1:20 remaining in the quarter). Both
Juliana Robertson and
Audrey Robertson each had an and-one three-point play in the quarter, and Audrey's conversion led to LCU taking a 58-25 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Chaps scored the first six points of the fourth quarter and outscored the Falcons 14-6 over the first 7:30 of the final quarter.
Savannah Sumrall and
Brylee Winfrey each connected from long range in the fourth quarter, leading to Sumrall scoring five points in the quarter and pushing LCU's lead to its largest (31) following each of her two field goals in the quarter.
LCU was 9-of-19 (47.4%) from outside the arc, with Duncan finishing the game 6-of-8. She finished with 25 points and one-point shy of matching her career high (26) to lead all scorers.
Emma Middleton (13) and Schulte (11) each finished in double figures. Schulte also provided five assists and four steals (and a +31 plus/minus), and Middleton had three swipes and led LCU with six rebounds.
UTPB (5-10 overall and 4-10 in LSC play) was led by Popham, who finished with 15 points. The Falcons were held to 34.1% shooting (14/41) and they were 3-of-15 (20%) from outside.
